  • What is wrong with Amir's ankles?

For a guy who is just 27 years old, I think we should be concerned. With all the miles he's already put on, now tack on seemingly chronic bad ankles. It seems like they're just failing him because of playing lots of basketball, rather then any specific tweak. So he rests and misses games before the all star break, plays a couple, and they flare up again. Will he even have ankles left by the postseason? Or 2 years from now?

Watch the gif of the injury. He got kicked in the ankle that he injured before the break and tweaked it a bit. Freak accident he'll be fine.

If I remember correctly, he had surgery on his ankle back in 2012, right?

Will he even have ankles left.. ? Yes he will. If it's going to get worse and worse I'm pretty sure Raps will start looking for a solution just like Warriors did for Curry ( with the shoes and other stuff. )

Also, last ankle injury was more like bone bruise ( he said that himself ) and that means his ankle ligaments are weak, he needs to strengthen them and it takes some time, it's not few weeks process.

Plus, you have to account for the fact that he plays with Joakim Noah-like intensity. You've seen the toll that's taken on JN. Splitting minutes with 2Pat will only help him.

he's logging lots of minutes and bringing a shit ton of intensity (most nights). its bound to take its toll on his body.

27 minutes a game is nothing for a guy his age. My point is, you may never see a good, old amir johnson a la charles oakley.

I would KILL to see the Bargnani Primo commercial re-done word for word, and shot for shot, with Amir replacing Bargnani.

Coach Casey needs to spend five minutes reading about bone bruises, specifically on the ankle:

                    <2. Inter-osseous bruising
This is a damage of the bone marrow. The blood supply within the bone is damaged, and this causes internal bleedings. The trigger to this type of bone bruise is a repetitive high compressive force on the bone (extreme pressure on regular base). The areas most affected are the knee and the ankle from professional athletes, such as football, basketball players and runners.

                    3. Sub-chondral lesion
This type will occur beneath the cartilage layer of a joint. The main trigger is an extreme compressive force that literally crushes the cells, that results in a separation of the cartilage (or ligament) and the underlying bone, plus bleeding when the energy of the impact extends into the bone. The other trigger is a shearing force, it sustains from a rotational mechanism such as twisting and translational forces. These will also cause that the cartilage tissue will be stripped away and exposing the underlying bone. It results in the same injury as a compressive force injury but this is another source of the injury. This type is seen more frequently in football and basketball players.

The treatment of a bone bruise consists of rest and precaution. The affected area should be avoided to bear repetitive or strong loads. This is to avoid aggravation of the problem. Usually only painkillers (such as a small dosage of ibuprofen) are given to lighten the pain. The patient should receive advise about how he could reduce the load on the affected area and be made clear that if he does not rest enough the healing process will slow down or the structure can be damaged even more. The time for the resolution of a bone bruise is variable. At its earliest the bruise will be gone 3 weeks after the acute trauma.>

I think the concern is warranted in that Amir's a bit undersized and he depends on his athleticism to be truly effective. He won't age well past 30, imho.

But these mid-season bumps and bruises are a regular occurrence for him. Seems to happen every year, doesn't it?

With playoff aspirations this year, they really need to rest him down the stretch. I'd suggest that next to Lowry, he's the next most important guy needed to be 100% healthy (especially if they match up against big teams like Brooklyn or Indy). Amir at 85% is considerably worse than at 100%. He needs that athleticism.
