  • magic Johnsons role with lakers

Did any of you catch this news? When it was announced on NBA tv the network commentary was speculative on what it exactly entailed. Has there been any other news on his duties.

Doesn't matter, Lakers' dominance of the FA market and the league is done, they're stuck in the past with moves like this. CBA's have changed too much, more of the top stars are going to stay with their current teams for the extra $$$ and those who do hop around are going straight to contenders/to play with buddies. Nobody's going to LA "because it's LA" anymore, that's dropped too far down the list of factors affecting FA decisions.

I suspect the Magic Johnson hiring is just a PR move. Bringing in Magic might make the losing easier to swallow.

It doesn't help when they give out huge contracts to guys like Deng and Mozgov. In reality he's not going to really do anything to right that ship.

They need to draft well or make shrewd trades when those draft picks aren't helping. As S.R. said above.. the NBA landscape has changed. It'll be a lot harder to get top tier free agents to come to LA just because it's LA. Winning and money are the two most important influences in terms of where a guy is going to play.. and it's not the bright lights or big city (unless you're Carmelo I guess).

Magic Johnson already has a goal in mind more than a week after being named an adviser to Los Angeles Lakers co-owner and president Jeanie Buss.

"Working to call the shots, because it only works that way," Johnson told USA Today Sports when asked what he hopes his role will be. "Right now I'm advising. I get that. But at the end of the day, then we all got to come together and somebody's got to say, 'I'm making the final call,' all right? And who's that going to be? So, we'll see what happens."
LOL I see rain clouds ahead....

As much as I love the Lakers and Magic . . . a legend in every way, I must agree here. We're kind of due for a re-birth. The old ways need to die.
