  • What Happens To Free Agents In A Lockout?

Something I was thinking about this morning is what happens to a free agent in 2011 if they are unsigned when the lock out happens? Do they just not get paid? I'm guessing they will just take a 1 year contract over seas but it's interesting. If anyone has any thoughts I'd love to hear them!

Imagine Melo playing oversees for a year... I wonder how much he would get offered?

I doubt it. Most likely they would train and play some light basketball to keep in shape. Risking injury overseas for a 1 year contract is not worth it.

So where do they get their income? Or do they just live off savings?

That's the whole point of the lockout. Most players play pay-check to pay-check despite their millions. So the owners lock them out and eventually the non-superstars will cave in. Because a vote from Jordan Farmar is worth the same as a vote from LeBron James, superstars will get left in the dust when the lesser talents of the NBA become money-starved. It's very rare that they bolt for Europe, especially now given the economic crisis in Greece.

ezz_bee, nobody gets paid during a lockout. That's the whole reason why the owners have the upper hand.

If I have a $50,000K monthly mortgage payment I'm looking for work elsewhere.

nobody gets paid??? that seems a bit weird to me! how are they able to get around the fact that there are signed contracts?

because they signed a contract to play basketball, which they're not doing?

brandon marshall said if the nfl goes into a lockout he will try out for the nba.

maybe, there is a vice versa in there.

ezz_bee, the players and owners signed an agreement called the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement). It dictates many things about players rights and payments. There is always an expiration time to these agreements and once they expire all current contracts are on hold until the owners and players come to an agreement on changing it or continuing as is. The owners don't like the current CBA because the economy has drastically changed since it was signed and as such they have proposed new terms that they feel are relevant to the times. Until one side caves the players don't get paid. The key thing to remember is that contracts are signed under the CBA. If there is no CBA then there are no games and if there are no games then the players don't get paid. Its the reason why the owners have all the leverage and it's the reason why they won 11 years ago during the last lockout.
