  • Calderon to mentor

So say Kahn is willing to make a play for Calderon (under the heading of 'mentoring Rubio').

Knowing that his 2012/13 year is a team option makes Martell Webster a candidate for pick-up (basically makes his next year an expiring contract) and Luke Ridnour is a workable PG (3 more years but his salary is manageable). So...

    Calderon
    FOR
    Webster, Ridnour and ?

What makes the ? work for you? Remember that the Wolves 2011 1st won't be available as they will, obviously, owe the Clippers their 2012 (the 2011 being protected). Technically this means that the Wolves 2013 1st wouldn't be available either. The Wolves do have the Memphis 2011 1st and a heavily protected Utah 1st (no go 2011, top-14 protected in 2012 and top-12 in 2013 - 2nd rounder after that).

Ridnour may be an 'easier' trade to make (given his salary) than Calderon but the extra year hurts that scenario.

Myself, I think the two 1st's (Memphis and Utah) would make this a tempting trade; even if I had to throw in a 2013 2nd and a little cash (or something like that). Losing Webster early helps and, while the 2011 draft may not be a good draft year, there are some intriguing late picks so the rebuild would proceed apace. Finally, Ridnour is workable (as mentioned) and the Utah pick - even if a longshot - could be available in 2012 (if Utah bounces back even a little) and given that 2012 should be a DEEP draft having an extra pick is gold.

    Thoughts?

I like the 2012 pick ideas, but the Minny pick this year is available since they have a second pick.

A pick, yeah. I'm actually really high on Webster, he's a great shooter and plays excellent perimeter defense. He'd be a awesome backup.

Good pick up - I highly doubt the option to get that pick is there but it does open up the door for a switch of picks (lottery pending). Might be handy that Minnesota picked a SF last year, has an entrenched PF and they may not want Irving.

Minnesota is a definite trade partner.

It could be they would trade their lower pick (would we even want that?) which could mean we could look at a Nolan Smith as a backup PG (putting other trades on the table) or a Kenneth Faried that some on the republic love.
There was another team really looking at Ridnour (cannot remember who for the life of me) so could be flipped for another pick/asset, and Bayless would become expendable with a drafting of Smith.
