  • Can the new look LAKERS beat the HEAT?

You have three damn good but older vets in Gasol, Nash and Kobe + HOWARD.

Consider for a moment that both teams remain healthy - Can the new look LAKERS beat the HEAT?

It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up.

    Nash
    Bryant
    Jamison
    Gasol
    Howard

    Chalmers
    Wade/Allen
    James
    Lewis
    Bosh

Both teams are filled with all-stars. On paper the Lakers are the far better team, but the Heat are extremely good with the additions of Allen and Lewis on the perimeter.
The Lakers can most definitely win and beat the Heat, but I would still have to go with the Heat because of the dynamics of the team. LeBron and Wade inside, Bosh mid-post area, and Allen, Chalmers, and Lewis on the perimeter. More athletic as well.

Nash will be working hard to get Bryant and Dwight shots. Pau Gasol will control the play-making high post area. The triangle would be beautiful with this team, but it is now a more free flowing offense. I really don't know how this team flows, but on paper it looks great.

I think what decides a game for either, is defensively. Where both teams on paper, look extremely good as well... I'm looking forward to next season.

      Edge Lakers.

Bosh can't handle Howard in the paint. I'm not saying that every possession will flow through Dwight down low, but it would be comforting to know that even when Kobe is missing his shot, even when Nash is being slowed on the penetration and even when Gasol's mid-range game is off, you'll still have Howard in the post man handling Bosh.

I predict that this Laker's squad will take two of the next three championships. I'd give them all three, but injuries happen. The real question now.. Does Kobe catch MJ in the championship ring race. I'm thinking he doesn't retire until he does, with this unit he's been handed.

I like the Lakers more. The Heat don't have the power to bang in the pain with those guys.

This Lakers off-season has been otherworldly.

I'm not sure there's a team in the league that could beat them in a 7 game series.

Look for Mike Brown to be on the "Hot-Seat" now. Or at least, the media created hot seat.
If this team doesn't perform right out of the gate, theres going to be ALOT of talk about bringing back Phil Jackson for one last hoorah. Book it.

We saw what the versatility of Miami did to the big men of the Thunder. Even though they aren't the skilled/athletic big man Dwight and Pau are, they were able to out-compete them totally.

              Lakers sign Jodie Meeks.

              Lakers Ink Jodie Meeks

According to Mark Medina of The Los Angeles Times the Los Angeles Lakers have come to an agreement with free agent shooting guard Jodie Meeks. Medina reports the deal is for two-years and worth $3 million. Meeks has a player option for year two.

Meeks has spent the last three years of his career with the Philadelphia 76ers after briefly starting off his career with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Lakers are bringing him in primarily for his three-point shooting. On his career he’s a .371 shooter from beyond the arc.

The signing of Meeks and small forward Devin Ebanks, who they came to terms with earlier in the offseason, likely ends an offseason for the ages for the Lakers.
Wow. Solid signing to close out acquiring Dwight Howard.

Also, they were able to acquire Duhon and Clark. But in my eye, they're nothing but bench warmers.

A lot is being made out of Nash, Kobe and Dwight playing together.

Watch out for Antawn and Pau Gasol. Antawn will most likely start off the bench. Their production will give lakers the edge against most teams.

I do not think the Lakers are as much of a lock like some of you guys are making it seem. Remember, the Heat dominated the Thunder with both Wade and Bosh not at 100%. I dont think that Howard all of a sudden makes them a lock. The team has dealt with being out matched in the paint before. I think I read that this Heat team was 3-1 when playing against Pau and Bynum. They handled Pau and Bynum, but now they can not handle Pau and Howard (who many think is worse offensively than Bynum)?

The way I see it, the Miami Heat are going to be getting back healthy/rested Wade and Bosh (neither of which participated in the Olympics), a Lebron who no longer has that 1st championship pressure on his back, 2 improving defensive point guards (Chalmers and Cole), Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis.

Nash, while he will be good, is in decline. As we saw, he needed to sit games out every now and then in Phoenix. How will he hold up having to play through the playoffs, and like many of you say, through the Finals? It is going to be the first time in a while where Kobe is not going to be the best player on his team. We do not know how that may play out. We do not know how these guys will blend.

I think it is entirely possible that the Lakers win the championship this year, but I do not know if I can be confident until I see this squad play together. It is very rare that a team that brings in two or more key players has immediate success. Boston in 07-08 is an exception. The Lakers may not be able to get it done this year. If that is the case, I have a hard time believing a 1 year older Kobe/Nash/Jamison/Peace/Gasol will have an easy time beating the Heat (or even the Thunder) with Howard. 5 of their main 6 players are in decline.

It will be very interesting to watch unfold. I would like to see Kobe win his 6th.

i think the lakers have it. can't see howard letting lebron get too far deep in the paint. with meta on him when he is starting up high. this move really makes wade/bosh have to beat the lakers, it aslo puts a lot of pressure on allen to hit shots.

this would be a great finals though almost as good as a lakers/raptors finals.

forgot about that. they got jamison as well. i think you could see blake play the 2 guard off the bench with duhon at point for spells. lakers have a really good team for next year

The Lakers are still confronted with an awkward fact: they do not have the Lebronniac on their roster. This guy is worth any 3 all-stars. His playoff run puts him in the class of the very greatest players ever, perhaps third behind Magic and Michael Jeffrey Jordan. Nobody can stop him, so I don't know if the Lakers can overcome him as a team or not. No other team comes close though.

Nash and Howard alone should tear up the west. KB24 has to tone down the shooting sprees he gets himself into. Misses a shot and then spends the rest of the game trying to make up for it by taking more bad shots.

The Lakers are hiring Eddie Jordan to install the Princeton offense, which KB24 and Pau like a lot. I expect a huge year from Pau. The offense will run through him in the post.

The New Heat Order do not have enough big bodies to deal with the Lakers' size, and that will be the key, assuming both get to the finals. But that's not happening unless the Princeton experiment works spectacularly well.

Everybody was saying some of the same things about the 2004 Lakers, and that experiment failed miserably.

I would enjoy that, especially what analysts will be talking about during the Summer :P

But I agree with your points about them not being a complete lock..

The Miami Heat is so versatile, defensively and offensively, they were able to shut down the big men of tandems in Gasol/Bynum, and Ibaka/Perkins.

Gasol/Howard, should make for an impressive defensive anchor, but offensively could be some differences.

                          Wade
                          Allen
                          LeBron
                          Lewis
                          Bosh

                          vs.

                          Nash
                          Bryant
                          Jamison
                          Gasol
                          Howard

EDIT* Damn, I can't wait for these two teams to go head-to-head.

going to be awesome. i don't think miami can win with those 5, not arguing your opinion thats just the first 5v5 ive seen in this thread. i think lewis will be a weak link leaving bosh and bron in the paint with howard. lewis has to come off the bench and play against reserves. i think that howard is too big and strong for any of miami' players. bosh would have to be the 4 and they would need a really big body in the paint. i just scanned the whole miami roster (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/roster/_...mia/miami-heat) they better hope pittman can do it. one thing that howard has over bynum by leaps and bounds is athleticism and mobility, we won't be seeing the l.a. big man hobble down the floor after everyone going both ways anymore. if pau can shoot a good % from 18 feet and l.a. can leave howard alone down low on offense that team is going to be sick. if meta hits 35%+ on corner threes career 34%http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/25/metta-world-peace. (http://espn.go.com/nba/team/roster/_...angeles-lakers)

miami is really good but this lakers team might be better than them.

I was initially thinking that it would be Lakers in a lock, but when you look at the bench...mmmm. Miami has better scoring I would say. I guess it comes down to how effective Nash is at avoiding the double teams from opponents locking up Kobe or Howard. Realistically, when you get to the play-offs, your starters are going to be logging a lot of minutes. I don't know if the Lakers starters will be able to play 38-40 minutes a game, at their ages. If they can't, Miami has the bench edge.
