I didn't like the signing of Fields when it happened and still hate it. He's an end of the bench type player getting paid like a regular rotation guy. He's a decent defender, but no where near a lock down type guy. Sadly his contract makes him almost unmovable. He better get his ass in the gym and turn himself into something resembling a 3 point specialist if he wants to have any sort of career. Really hope he gets packaged in a deal heading outbound. Damn Yogi Stewart situation all over again.
I'm a really big Landry Fields fan and I still hated the way it happened. It's not even just about the dollars....It's just that, the motivation for signing (and type of offer) a player should be the desire to acquire said player, not as a move to acquire another player. If Nash wasn't on the table, would he have pursued Fields at all? If so, it's certainly unthinkable that he would've made the same offer. Just another instance of BC with his head far up his ass.

    • IT comes down to being all Nash's fault for just not simply saying "Im not signing in Toronto" would have helped the franchise out either way. The only justice in this is that that ring hunting A hole is now a spot up shooter on the Lakers and may not make the playoffs seriously fuck Nash. On to Fields.... he does good things plays D, off ball handles but not worth the money and with his limited offensive abilities he cant even rack up easier offense against the opposing teams bench....

Fields is a very standard middle player he doesnt do anything particularly above average with a lackluster offensive game.. Raps have to move him.

What? No. This is nonsense. In no way whatsoever is it Nash's fault. BC is an idiot. Nash did not do anything wrong.

        • Nash had no intention of coming to Toronto yes BC jumped the gun but Nash could of said right away Im not coming to Toronto he had the organization and fans in suspense for a week on his decision. If he didnt keep it secret BC would have went and spent silly money on a player on the decline..

This should've been heavily foreseen. At this point in his career, Steve wants nothing but to be with his family and win a championship. He will have none of those here.

This is just connecting back to the bias we seem to think Canadian players have. There is none.

??? Says...you??? Nash's first choice wasn't Toronto. As isaacthompson said, his priorities are winning and his family, so what incentive is there to play for a far from contending Toronto team for a former MVP in his last years?

Did you read anything about the decision since? I respect Nash even more, because he clearly knows BC well enough to know that he would've just been a "circus act" (I think the words Nash used) just to sell tickets. That's hardly a dignified end to a career.

FWIW, I think Nash's approach with Toronto was always the same, and that is: if no contender made him a good offer, he would take the stupid amount of money BC was throwing at him and live with being a circus act for the last 2 years of his career.

My point isn't about his numbers, many people have used this argument against me too, but anyone playing lots of time and getting touches will definitely get their numbers. That's not what I'm talking about.

T-Mac like attitude? So what you're saying is fairly contradictory. T-Mac looked like he wasn't trying, because he actually wasn't trying. I'm not saying Ross isn't trying, I'm saying his composure and body language is poor, and shows he is expecting to be given something he definitely has not earned this season. He hasn't earned playing time with inconsistent play, and far too many "rookie mistakes". Makes too many silly plays out there.

Demar works hard, and it's definitely undeniable. You yourself (former Demar homer - like myself) said Demar has improved every season. Maybe I should go digging for responses to back it up? If you would like to use his numbers as an argument, than check the season statistics, and it definitely has improvements from season, to season.

I will agree Ross is more skilled than Derozan was in his first year, and obviously a much more athletic player, but I'm not seeing much. He's had three good games (now counting the game vs. Bulls).

Like I said, I'm one of those who will wait and see, but I'm just saying I don't see anything too special out of him. You, anyone on this poster, can give me your opinion, but the only person that's going to change that, is Ross himself.

P.S, I'm not saying Ross can go out there and play to prove me wrong only lol
T Mac always looked like that. You can't say he wasn't trying because he actually was you don't put up 30 ppg from not trying. Ross netted 13 points in 18 mins... He's already a better finisher than Derozan

Gerald Green is also a better finisher.....but that doesn't make him a better player either. I think we need to take a step back from all this talk about Ross being a starter or Fields being a starter NEXT YEAR. It just won't happen without MAJOR improvement.

Truth is i like to give rookies a bit of slack....its tough being a rookie in the NBA. It's a grown man's game. Rookies don't get any respect from officials and veterans take advantage of their mistakes. That being said, I like Ross' game. He just needs to work on being consistent and aggressive. I think it would be foolish to throw him into the starter's role without seeing significant improvement next year.

Fields?? Let's put it this way.....I would rather see Ross start over him. Actually, I was screaming for BC to offer *something* to O.J. Mayo. Mayo ended up with a 1 year 5.5 million dollar salary from Dallas. Fields does nothing great....what's his talent?? To me, he's a bench player for a playoff team...an over paid one (notice the constant theme for Bryan Collangelo??). Fields was smart to sign that offer....Hedo Turkglu was smart to sign that contract......Andrea was smart for signing his contract.....BC is the MORON.

Gerald Green is not a better finisher, check the stats. Truth is that DeMar has made some improvements but is, after four years, still not a solid starter.

He can rain three's and he can finish. He's already a better defender too. But i doubt he'll ever get his chance with this team, BC will probably let him walk because of his love for DD and he'll end up torching us for the next decade just like all the other former raptor stars.

Being able to contribute without the ball.

That is a talent in and of itself.

I think you mean if we let DD go he will destroy us, Fields isnt destroying anyone I dont see what everyone sees in him hes so mediocre...

                            • Ross has the tools to be a starting 2 in this league. I do think he still has ways to go & he can start by adding strength & muscle to his frame. He's very athletic (hops, first step, acceleration & top speed) but right now, he settles the in between floaters (which isn't bad) because it must be difficult for a skinny kid to finish around/over full grown men. His shot is shaky but I imagine it improving because he has a good form and release. Defensively, he can improve his awareness but he has the lateral quickness to stay in front of guys. Increasing his strength will also help him in terms of man defense.

I'm not ready to hand him the starting 2 spot but he does have the tools to be a very good player on both ends. He needs TLC from this organization so we can reap the benefits of his skill set.

I agree with all of the above. More consistent minutes next year will be key to his growth.

Right now, his TLC from the organization is coming in the form of a chair on the bench.
