For the first time it appears ownership is willing to spend, spend, spend because content (i.e. ratings and interest) matter like never before thanks to a broadcasting majority ownership team.
    great news to Raps fans!
just as side notes: I'm excited by what's going on around our team these days; hope we get the right candidate to run the Raps

    p.s.
thanks for posting Weaver's biography. Certainly sounds like some one, who'd love to see here (at least judging by your summary)

A good run down of Colangelo's odyssey from genius to dolt, as per Zach Lowe at Grantland.com:

I think the bold is why he is no longer making basketball decisions.
Great somewhat "outside" review. For whatever you think of Bargnani, it is fool's gold to make that pick the anchor you tie to Colangelo. What he's done with it since is more relevant. Maybe a different GM wouldn't have been swayed by the flashes of potential if it wasn't him who mined it. Maybe the same could be said for Derozan. That said, when the restricted free agent offers get thrown around this summer, it will be interesting to see what a player like him may be offered (and where that may have left the Huskies). In an semi related note (in terms of other basketball bloggers), has anyone noticed that T Chisholm is absent from the TSN site? No current or past columns listed. Odd.

            but we don't need a roster shake-up.
We don't need a full out blow up and rebuild.

We desperately need a roster shake up

We still have no answer at backup PG

Our starting wings can't shoot threes.

Our starting PF can't stay healthy long enough to get traded.

Once he is traded we lack a third big OR a starting PF depending how you lean in that debate.

We don't have a single lock down defender. (just guys that flare up on occasion)

We don't have a single three point specialist (just guys that flare up on occasion)

BC meddled in the coaching this year (I'm sure of it after listening to Smitch talk about Bryan meddling with him) So I'm not sure which Lowry we get...regardless of who we get his chubby ass needs to get into and stay in shape.

This team could not be MORE in need of a shakeup.

AMIR - JONAS are the only two Raptors I would hate to see go

And Amir might be that guy that has to go in order to get someone back since he is one of our very few HIGH VALUE ASSETS

Thanks. I just found it weird that you don't see it listed on the main nba page anymore. Still tough to find. That's what I get for looking elsewhere for my raptors info

                Agreed.

I don't even want to try to prioritize the importance of moves, but moves are needed, and sound like they are an inevitability under TL.

I think these are your major trade assets, and 'expendable' ones, in the context of a team with a lot of holes and no immediate hope of championship contention:

                1. Lowry (expiring, cheap contract relative to production, but going to get more expensive at end of season)
                2. Gay (yes, I know this is not a popular opinion, but I really have a hard time seeing him as a top-2 player on a contending team, which is what he's getting paid to be. With 2 years left, he might be tough to trade, but I think he still has some cache among the non-analytic types in the league. I would *hate* to see Toronto re-sign him at a similar price tag.)
                3. Derozan (price tag is meh, not too high or too low; he has a lot of admirers around the league, is a good character guy, etc. -- probably the easiest sale of all three)

You could include Ross, but his salary is so low, and he's not proven much so far, so he's simply salary-match/sweetener fodder right now. He alone isn't going to make or break a significant deal.

Amir is a good trade asset, too, but he, along with Val, were I GM, would be the two closest to 'untouchable' status. Again, I know this is probably not the most popular opinion, but I think Amir is the rock of the current team in terms of veteran attitude, work ethic, toughness -- everything this team is supposed to be about, not to mention his community love affair -- and at his price tag, he should be kept unless he's the deciding factor in a deal that nets a star.

I think Valanciunas is the #1 asset, of course, but I don't think they would consider trading him just yet. Not sure, though. This new GM has no loyalty or emotional investment in any of these players, and could see Val as a way to bundle out some of the most unattractive assets. Imagine what a Val-Gay-Bargs package might net you in return... As a fan, I'm emotionally invested enough after last season to want to see Val stay, but depending on the return.......

                • Hold onto JV and blow the rest of the team up please. Get a GM in that knows how to draft talented players, arm him with multiple picks in the next years draft and lets start fresh. I just don't see how any amount of tinkering with the current roster makes us contenders. Add any one player to this roster that would be realistic to acquire through trade or free agency and we are still non-contenders.

                      • Definitely Ujiri. Great creative mind who obviously knows what he's doing and isn't afraid to make moves that look crazy initially but work for the best in the long term. My thing with Uriji is he seems to make moves towards the big picture, as opposed to bandaid head scratchers.

Weaver and Morway are also interesting.

I think that statement depends on what you can get from the tinkering.

Indiana is a solid team with good coaching (despite Hibbert gaff). I don't think Toronto is that far away from Indiana but I might be incredibly naive and a homer - but again depends on what you get from current assets.
