  • Dallas wanted Casey back

This is a fresh start for both men. In the summer, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban put out feelers, wondering if Casey could be released from his deal and allowed to return to Dallas. In brushing back that attempt, MLSE quietly committed itself to the Ujiri/Casey pairing.

At least Casey knows he has a job one way or another.

Cuban really screwed the Mavericks by angling for FAs he couldn't land. What a hot mess.

      So, Cuban was tampering?

Far more likely he was curious as to whether Toronto would trade the remainder of Casey's contract to him (a la Doc Rivers to the Clippers).

          is there really a difference?

There is nothing wrong with contacting the team and discussing with them Casey's situation. But Cuban/Dallas wouldn't be able to contact Casey directly and talk about his next contract

Wonder if we could have got a first round draft pick for him?

um ... for an assistant coach who we are likely to let walk anyways .. not a chance in hell.

I guess so .. although Im not sure how flattering it is that teams are interested in him in an assitant coaching role. I would hope the same could be said for pretty much all current head coaches.

And .. this tells us what we already know .. casey IS a good assistant, focused on defense. Head coach (especially the offensive side of the ball) .. im not convinced.
