I get the love for Hayward. He is an awesome player when asked not to be the man. Defends, creates, rebounds, plays off ball - total glue guy - while being a capable scorer when not the focus.
I agree, they need someone with his skill set on the team. Every one of those guys is a number one/two option on their respective teams, but it's impossible to predict how they respond to not being that guy.

Thing is though, people have been saying that for years about Derozan, and he continues to prove them wrong.
Yeah, but I'm saying it now. So it's totally different.

You have a good point to an extent. Consistency is what separates the truly great from the talented.

However when it comes to his scoring, while he has certainly improved in the eye test, the scoring statistics have stayed remarkably the same to a little worse.

I like DeRozan as a person from what he portrays and is portrayed of him. I hope Masai finds a way to build success with him. It is a hell of a lot easier to build with what you have than to replace pieces..... unless you hit the jackpot in the lottery. In a sense the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.

NBA.com MVP Ladder: Lowry out, Derozan in at #9

Is this what a 40 pt night does for your stock? Sheesh, these guys are crazy, did they not see the previous games against CHA, LAL, and BOS? I like Derozan, and I would bet moreso than most, but Lowry is the MVP of the Raps!
Thanks for this link. This is surprising! At least he's getting some recognition. There were other great players snubbed from the Team USA like John Wall, Monta Ellis.

I would say Derozan is the MVP of this team, Lowry would be number 2. Derozan has stepped up to be the guy after Gay got traded. Lowry though is proving me wrong as well, and his play is key to the team's success.

I love DeRozan, but it made sense he didn't make it.

DeRozan provides: Scoring, athleticism, size, perimeter play.
More then half of the names provide the very same thing, but either more efficiently, or just better.

Redundancy isn't the way to win basketball games, just ask Rudy Gay and DeMar.

Anyways, makes sense Korver, Thompson, Beal (three-point shooters), and Kawhi Leonard (shooter, defender) made it over him. Once DeMar becomes a more efficient basketball player, and can continue to improve and consistently perform defensively, we'll see his name in there sooner than later.

I don't think it's a huge snub. You need specialists, not a whole lot of players that need the ball in their hands to successful.

It's not necessarily disrespect to DeMar by not putting him on the list. He's put on a show this year and proved to everyone that he can a very good player. It's just the guys on that list are better than him.

I disagree with the reason, if we went purely with talent, there is absolutely no reason Beal, Korver, Thompson, Leonard, or Hayward should be on there over DeRozan.

The thing about this list is that its just an initial release, and Demar can definitely prove why he deserves a spot by continuing to improve this season and make the roster later on. The roster can change at any time.

I think some publicity would definitely help in Derozan's cause, so long as he earns it by playing within the team.
I know this may be a bit controversial but I think the Raptors have proven that they're the best team in the NBA from Canada

I just thought he could be useful too coz of his decent and much improved midrange game. Maybe he could master the FIBA 3-pointer which is closer than the NBA 3-point line. And the experience too of being among the elites. I'm not expecting him to be on the final team. Didn't expect him to be cut so early. Oh well, I guess it makes the selection team's job easier by letting the better players go earlier so they won't be making more difficult decisions later on lol.

His peak value will come when he's 27-28, if he stays healthy.

Derozan may be more athletic than they are, but skill and basketball IQ wise, no. Not sure if it's because he's white or because he's playing for the JAzz, but Hayward is one of the more underrated wing players in the NBA. He can play the 2 or 3. He's a very good rebounder and passer. And he's also great at drawing contact and converts at a good % at the line. Hayward's going to earn himself a good paycheque this off season.

Derozan is not and probably can't be a system player, he's a guy who needs a ball in his hand to score, isn't a good spot up shooter, isn't a good defender and honestly he wouldn't be a benefitial player for team USA, a completely logical decision

He Isn't as iso-heavy as gay tho. He gets most of good, efficient looks from midrange off of pin downs, curls, and screens. I think that in itself is useful. This team has to many three point shooters. I honestly don't get why they put korver, he is not a better rebounder or defender than demar, although I do think he is a better passer and three pointer shooter.
