With DC receiving a 3-yr deal, will LF be left sitting on the bench in 2014-15? DC preaches defense, but it was apparent he did not utilize LF's defensive prowess on JJ after success in game 2. LF was cleared for game 7 and DC played him for less than one minute and JJ goes off for 26 pts.

When LF was brought in from the Knicks, I was excited about having a cutter and finisher at the rim with the chemistry he had with Lin. Also, having a defense-minded player with solid bball IQ is invaluable in managing and forcing TOs. Sure, LF had issues with his elbow, but I felt bad for him having no PT in developing his game. When he did get in the game, I was disappointed in KL and DD never passing the ball to him in any sets.

My gut feeling is that MU wants to unload his 8.5M contract and may have suggested to DC to not play LF in order to amnesty his contract and in turn, not receive the fan backlash if he performed admirably as a stopper. If he does get traded, I wish him the best so at least he will be able to play under a HC/system that values his skillsets and develops his game.

    • Agree with OP's premis. Denver may want to shed salary after their disappointing season. They'll have Gallanari back next year, which could make Wilson Chandler expendable. Jared Dudley has fallen out of Doc's rotation in LA. If the Clippers need to get under the luxury tax, Toronto can take advantage. (He fits within the Raptors' TPE, as well.) Neither of these players are game-changers, but can hit threes, play defense, and will be an upgrade over Salmons as the first guard off the bench.

Or, maybe Masai can package an asset or two along with Salmons to get a player like Arron Afflalo or Thaddeus Young?

      • I don't think Fileds qualify for Amnesty ... Didn't we sign him after the new CBA ?
As far as trading him, Good luck with that ... No one is going to pay for a guy who is due to get that salary while sat on bench almost for 2 years.
As far as him being a defensive specialist or ... This was never his reputation even in NY. Yes, he had success against JJ in short time in one game but that is it.

Casey and MU do not have Fields in their long term plans and this is why he did not get any playing time.

        • Undervaluing Amir, overvaluing Barnes.

Johnson is an advanced stats posterboy. Golden State wasn't the only team trying to pry him loose at the trade deadline.

Harrison Barnes has played at a level somewhere between Chuck Hayes and John Salmons, other than a nice playoff run last season.

No, his reputation was as an effective high IQ 2-way player. Unfortunately his elbow issues have destroyed his offensive value.

And the amnesty is a moot point for anyone. The Raptors used it on Kleiza.

            • Always needs to be pointed out when his contract comes up, but for cap and trading purposes, it's $6.25 million, because of the way he was signed (RFA offer sheet). And Jamshid is right, he's under the new CBA, plus we already used our one-time amnesty on Kleiza.

I think we could use the stretch provision on him, but this would leave us paying $2.08 million to him each year for the next three years. I'd rather get him off the books sooner.

Only way I can see him getting traded is if someone's looking for a 2015 expiring contract to get rid of another, longer contract. It's going to be a long road back for him, if he even wants to go through with it.

              • Nothing personal against Vince (anymore). But he is old. Anything more than the vet minimum and I'd take a pass. You can always hire him as an assistant coach, or something else within the organisation, if it's about the story and the victory lap.

I won't because my expectations of this 38 year old guy are not very high. Unless of course he will be dogging it again.

Some fans will just boo Carter for fun, hell we got stupid fans who boo the Raptors when they don't get their stinking slice of pizza.

My thoughts exactly, get some guy through the draft who is hungry to play and he can do just as good of a job with a lot less expectations and scrutiny then a guy that is ready to retire.
You're right about the booing. It's possible. Like you said, there will always be fans booing when we don't get pizza. Therefore, it makes no difference who we sign.

There aren't a lot of players in the NBA that are hungrier than a 38 year old chasing a championship. You won't find that in a 20 year old, that's for sure. Look at Terrence Ross, who has a lot of similar abilities as Carter. Yes.. he had a lot less expectations. That didn't help us much. For the league minimum I'd do it in a heartbeat. He'd do more than John Salmons.

We already used the amnesty if I remember correctly.

FYI, I dug around on CBAFAQ and found the reference you are probably remembering. Free agent cap holds are excluded from team salary only when considering exceptions and S+T's in relation to the apron and whether a hard cap is instituted. Check Q14. I believe that is where your confusion is coming from.
Yes I had already read that. Notice first few sentences:

A team's cap room (referred to simply as "room" in the CBA) refers to its ability to sign players to free agent contracts. If a team is above the cap, then its room is limited to the exceptions it possesses. If the team is below the cap, then its room is how far it is below the cap when all salaries and cap holds are included.

Again, free agent reference. I'm talking trades.

This season he's still shot better, rebounded way better, more steals and blocks, had almost double the WS and DWS, higher PER and has almost as many assists as Salmons.

Last year he had 9-4-1 on 44%, had a great playoffs, and showed some really good defensive skills. He's been bad this season, but not salmonella bad at any point these last two years

                            • If Fields spends enough time working on his jumper this offseason (assuming he's elbow injury is completely behind him), I think he can work his way back into the rotation.

But the biggest key will be whether that "bench wing" roster spot is filled, either with Salmons, Carter, or whoever. If so, then Fields is likely SOL.

Yeah, but you know as well as I that the cap affects more than just the ability to sign free agents. It obviously also affects how trades work, or you wouldn't have included your third option to start with.

The only section that notes any exception to team salary calculations is the section I quoted on tax apron hard cap rules. There's no reason to believe the team salary noted in the trade section is any different than the team salary defined for free agency. Especially since there are examples (the apron) where they explicitly state that it is calculated differently, and no such explicit statement is made for trades.
