Signed a FA PF last off season and go into tax would have been one consideration. Clearly Pascal Siakam as starting PF put us in the position of having to trade TR to get a legitimate PF.
1 - Masai signed Sullinger, which was pretty well all he could do financially, because

2 - Raps couldn't sign an expensive FA (e.g. Ryan Anderson) and go into tax, not because they were too cheap, but because NBA salary cap rules did not allow them to.
If we knew half as much about coaching an NBA team as we think, we"d know twice as much as we do.

    • Who knows who Masai talked to during FA anyway? A lot of the PF market got ludicrous contracts, not just Ryan Anderson.

      • Heck, Masai tried to nab an expensive PF. He tried to trade for Ibaka at the draft, and was very close to signing Pau Gasol (and dumping Ross) except Gasol decided to go to the Spurs instead.

In retrospect, it was good that we didn't sign Gasol. He's obviously not the same player he used to be.

In agreement. He got close to 16M?

For sure it's better but it's nice to dream of going to NBA finals and based on my observations that may not be the goal of MLSE. I don't have the answer but like most posters on this forum I would love to see us get to NBA finals. The only plausible scenario I see at this point is if LBJ gets a serious injury . Matt52 used post on different strategies in this regard .
I always thought this type of theory was really silly.

Of course MLSE is happy that the Raptors are a 50 win team and they've enjoyed the extra gates, etc. that comes with hosting playoff games. That shouldn't be any type of dark or dirty secret - they are still a business after all. But all the extra money, exposure, popularity et al from second and third round playoff runs gets multiplied ten fold if they were ever to reach the NBA finals or win a championship, so there's absolutely no reason for them to not chase that aspiration. That's true for MLSE and the Raptors, and virtually every other ownership group and their franchise around the league.

On a more micro level with MLSE specifically, they just green lighted an absolute tank job for the Maple Leafs over the last two seasons, who are an even bigger cash cow than the Raps. If the Raptors won't tear it down and start over right now, it's because Masai thinks there's a better strategy for them moving forward. Not because of some MLSE conspiracy theory to stay where they are.

Yup, and if things go pear-shaped early on with a bad string of losses and some injuries (and if Lowry walks especially), Masai can and will turn on a dime mid-season and get us into the top 10 of the lottery.

I would be very interested to hear from MLSE employees /staff who visit this site regarding their observations.

Because every summer the team and its fans rationalize maintaining the status quo.

How anyone can possibly think we can reset this culture without changes in leadership is beyond me.

                            Dwane Casey
Uggetti: Few, if any, active coaches have walked through the fire of a hot seat and lived to tell about it more times than Dwane Casey has in Toronto. It feels like in every one of the past three seasons, there have been rumors of him getting ousted. Just last year, a report came out that said had the Raptors lost to the Pacers in the first round of the 2016 playoffs, he would have been fired. Casey’s endurance is admirable, but the Raptors’ roster construction isn’t. They re-signed Serge Ibaka, DeMar Derozan, and Kyle Lowry, but lost glue guys like P.J. Tucker and Patrick Patterson. Even in a weakened East, the Raptors look to be a few steps behind the Cavs, Celtics, and Wizards. And if they can’t upset those teams, will Casey survive this time around?

The whole underdog thing is fine by me. Our players need that chip on their shoulder and the less pressure on them the better.

                                Preach man.

Same GM, same coach, same players (except worse with 2 key role players in 2Pat and Tucker gone) yet somehow we're going to have culture change. We're going to run the exact same offense as we always have, still struggle to perform at anywhere near regular season level in the playoffs and then make a bunch more P.R. excuses and say a few buzzwords in the summer of 2018.
