SGs do not have to be that good at handling the ball. And it's not like the responsibilities are that different from SF. Typically you want your SG to do most of his movement without the ball and play a simple game with it.
Successful SGs (at least in today's game) should be able to share some ball handling duties with the PG in today's game. It'd be a lot harder to name starting SGs who can't.

They don't have to. You need one of your wings to be a secondary ballhandler. Doesn't have to be SG.

What is a prototypical SG exactly?

Michael Jordan was a horrible 3pt shooter in his prime. He's the greatest SG to ever play the game.
The three ball was not a part of the game as it is today in Jordan's prime.

The game has changed dramatically in nearly 20 years.

Besides maybe 1 or 2 teams, all starting caliber SGs (healthy) have to be able to handle the ball. Which starting guard this year (or any year) can't?

I get that. My point is, if you're a SG, you can still be a pretty good/effective player in this league even if you don't have a 3pt shot. Even in this era.

D-Wade is a perfct example since he plays in this era. SG, can't shoot 3's. Will go down as arguably the 3rd greatest SG tp play the game.

Depends on what extent of handling you mean.

Lots of SGs are competent ballhandlers. They are able to put the ball on the floor when defenders close out on their shot, and also generally able to use a screen to drive into the D for either a shot or a simple pass. If that's what you mean by ballhandling, then most starting wings (at either spot) in the league are capable of doing that.

And frankly, so is Ross from a purely skill standpoint. He's weak with the ball when defenders collapse on him, but his dribble is more than good enough to get by his man or use a screen. It's more a lack of awareness (which could jsut be from inexperience) and finishing ability (shies away from contact and doesn't drive all the way into the D).

2 years ago, Casey told DD "This summer, learn to dribble the ball off your foot, next summer, learn to not dribble the ball off your foot."

Ross is just a year behind.

Bringing the ball up the floor, initiating plays, setting up teammates, yeah that kind of thing.

Anyone can do what Ross does. You need good awareness and perception of the defence to be considered a 'good ballhandler'. Finishing ability has little to do with it. Ross doesn't get to the rim very often so his lack of finishing ability stands out more.

Derozan improved his ball handling in the offseason but I still wouldn't consider him a good ballhandler because of his inability to get where he wants go consistently.

I'm not sure where he'd fit, unless we trade one of Amir, JV or 2Pat for him.

Don't see Masai having interest in Kanter.

I think Utah has been shopping him for a while, since the emergence of Gobert.

I hear he and Fully are on the outs.

                            Whoops.

                            Wrong league.

JJ is not a bad ball handler (tho I do worry About his decision making sometimes) and Lou is a good ball handler off the bench. But Demar is quite a good ball handler now.
