Or the franchise tag. A franchise tag would piss off Durant but hey, that's business and right now this business favors the players too much and hurts the people who allow these players to make so much money: the fans.

If they simply took away the limit on max contracts this wouldn't be a problem. Lebron's max should not be the same as Mike Conley's or Lamarcus Aldridge, it makes no sense. That way you'd actually have to balance out a team properly.

I would argue the franchise tag is more important in the NBA because one guy bailing can hurt so badly.

It wouldn't be awful for the players if the tag cost was high enough. In this new cap system maybe it's hypothetically $30M for one season. Right now Durant is probably only going to do one year and be on the market next year's so what difference is it to him monetarily? If he wants a long deal outside the Thunder than he has to work with them for a S&T.

Why is it so bad if guys get to choose for themselves once in a while?twitter.com/anthonysmdoyle

He admitted to the world that he's not a #1 guy, he basically became #2 to Russ in OKC but now he just announced it to the world that that's what he is. It's kind of sad for himself, but it's also awful for NBA as a whole since 1/2 of the HOF talent from 3rd best team in the world just joined the 2nd best team in the world.
