Ross is all but gone.. he's got a $10M salary to use in a trade. That's significant for a team with not much cap space. Patterson is more vital since we don't have a PF that can start or come off the bench if he's moved. Plus 2Pat can play the 5 in small ball lineups and knows Casey's system which is pretty important for continuity.

If Durant stays put in OKC, they aren't trading anyone else. If Durant stays, it's to give them another chance at making a title run with this core.
Waiters is a free agent and they may not be willing to give him what he might get (somewhere around $15-$17M a year probably). Ross will be cheaper and can fill a similar role. Depends on what they value more. A guard who can shoot/score or another big. I don't think it's entirely unrealistic even if OKC wants the band back for one more try.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure Masai gave Ross that extension because of the fact that it would allow him to be a very useful trade asset in the offseason. If he didn't, we would've only been able to use Ross in a sign and trade which is a lot trickier to pull off when the other team could just sign him anyway.

Ross would be an RFA, so if any offers were presented then Masai could just match the offer.

But I agree. The extension gives him more flexibility in trades.

I know he would've been an RFA, but as soon as you match he's not tradeable again until December.

This. Even with 10 million a year, Ross' contract is a steal. We know what Biz can give you, but it is possible to find another player that can provide that.
I think the exact opposite. We can always find a streaky 3 pt shooter but much harder to find real toughness and a smart anchor on defense who also eats up boards and gives you second chance pts with hustle. A 5 who can guard basically 4 positions.

This 'we can always find a streaky 3pt shooter' thing is a myth. Especially one who can hit contested 3s. They don't grow on trees.

Everyone hears the same statements but has different takes on what it might mean...

                  1) Says areas they are focusing on is the 4 and backup 3.. if this sounds familiar it is ... because this was pretty much the same missing puzzle pieces that were being discussed last September...

2)They are going to do their homework on who is available at 9 in the draft... at the same time he says that the coaching staff will not be pushing for more young players who need development .... think he has the for sale sign up right now on the pick at 27 and possibly at 9.

3)Disucssed how both JV and Biz have grown signficantly as players ... One take would be that its a tough decision to significantly add to a 64M investment made in JV with an incremental 42M to 45M /3Yr commitment to Biz when the area identified as needing the most help is the 4. Another would be that he will make a run at Biz and solidify the 5 for years to come.

4)Mentioned the contribution made by Powell this year. Question he said about Norman was his shot. He said he answered that with his improved shooting. Mentioned Powell was a very low cost deal.... This is me reading into something but its the same position Ross plays and Ross may have reached his ceiling and if your looking to improve your backup 3 and open up cap space and aren't wed to bringing in new guys then maybe Ross is the salary out with a draft pick for either a trade to create space or a trade to improve the team.

5)He wants Demar back but isn't going to telegraph his plans for all to see.

                  Fearless predictions...some bold some not.

A sad and heartfelt so long to Luis and Biz.. and a thanks but no thanks to Jason Thompson

Surprisingly JJ returns at a veteran minium that won't count against the cap.

Terrence Ross after 4 years moves in a trade at the draft along with one or two of our 4 first round picks. You can only wait so long on potential and a good manager has to maximize asset value.

Demar returns at a hair or possibly two below max value with the promise that it will be used to improve the chances on a starting 4.

PPat is a desirable trade chip but he stays to come off the bench next year.

We buy in FA or trade for the 4 we really really need rather than draft that player. Raps reload for another run at the ECF with the intent of winning it and moving on to the Finals next year. The window is still open with this core for another year or two.

There's no such thing as a 2nd round bust.

They don't grow on trees but you can find them cheaper if you take advantage of opportunities or look hard enough. Someone like Robert Covington on the Sixers could probably give you most of what Ross does for example.

Except that ross will never be given the ball often enough at the end of a clock when u need someone who can hit a contested shot. And there are plenty of streaky 3 pt shooters out there. More of those than what biz brings. Thats my only point. Im not saying it would be wise to get rid of ross and keep biz because biz may get way too much money for a backup and we'd have too much money tied up in one position. Just saying its much more difficult to replace what biz brings than what ross brings.

I always thought we had approval for this. He just elected not to use it because he wanted to build the team the right way.

Yeah. It'd be pretty hard for us to actually go into the tax since the tax threshold is going to be around $110 million for next year and then even higher in 2017, but it's just good to know we can and will spend.
