But this was modern pentathlon, where horse jumping is one of 5 contests, so maybe this lottery is just for pentathlon and specialist equestrians bring their own horses.

Slaw is right at this level everyone has their own horse (or allowed to). The horses are really the athletes in the sport....not the rider in my view. Thats a travesty that they should force the poor animal who seems clearly in some distress (going by your description) to continue jumping. It could also be injured (eg. pulled a muscle). Which country was it do u know?
As far as distress, I felt sorry for the horse, but that's just me, I may suck at horse psychology!

Yep, it seems that the horse lottery is unique to pentathlon, and they give horses Olympic medals too!
The riding discipline involves show jumping over a 350–450 m course with 12 to 15 obstacles. Competitors are paired with horses in a draw 20 minutes before the start of the event. This unusual skill—the riding of a horse that is previously unknown to the rider—is unique in the world of sport and is one of the elements which gives Modern Pentathlon its special character. Currently, this is the only olympic sport that awards a medal to the participating horse.
These horses will get all the ladies when they show off their medals back home. And what stories they'll be able to tell their grandchildren!

This Serbian team is playing with the precision and execution we're used to seeing from Lithuania."Stop eating your sushi."

A lot of these events have been modelled after oldtime military inspired reqts. Just as strange to this eye as some of the extreme BMX type of events lately introduced.

She says the horse looked great during warmups but guesses that he never performed in front of a crowd that size and got scared of all the sounds.
