And yet it is the NBA players and coaches themselves who are hyping up Stevens with unsolicited gushing of praise. I've never heard Raptors or opposition players and coaches around the league talk about Casey like that. Check this one out....
Isaiah Thomas: Brad Stevens could be one of the greatest coaches who ever lived
Really your going to use a quote from one of his players. Especially the one that has the green light. Its like me using a Deebo quote. I've heard a lot of praise for Casey. Players and coaches. How about Rick Carlisle im sure he knows a little about basketball.
Pretty much. Chr1s1anL is essentially an extension of the Raptors organization and MLSE-- no matter what facts are presented to him, he's going to dismiss anything that overshadows, outperforms, or casts a Raptors player or coach in a negative light. It's okay to admit that Stevens is a better coach. The premise that the Raptors staggering their way to the Conference Finals is somehow proof that Casey is an elite coach is facile.
Pop has praised Casey as well. Raptors have had a top offence for the 3 years and just ranked out of the top 10 in defence this year.
When Casey first got here no one would of ever said that Lowry and DeRozan were top end talents. 5 years later they are multiple time allstars and Olympic gold medalist. Player development is apart of coaching. Casey has done a great job at that.
It's easy be a good defensive team when your roster is full of players who pretty much made the league because of thier defence.
I didn't see great adjustments in the playoffs. All I saw was IT going ISO for most of the game. Also he kept encouraging Sully to take 3s at the top of the line even though he was shooting under 30%.
Like he is a good coach but he is no where close to Pop. He is in the same tier as Casey if not a bit lower. You can continue this hype train though.
Also opinions of a guy thats never played or coached NBA basketball doesnt mean much to me.

I tried not to comment on Casey's coaching before, but this one really stings :
If Stevens is not as good as Casey(in your opinion) and Stevens failed to make adjustments "I didn't see great adjustments in the playoffs" then you're making this look like Casey is the prince of in game tactical adjustments and we all know what he specifically did with this issue all season long and how long it took him to realize and or do something about it(Scola...).

Didnt say Casey was the best coach in the league. All im saying is I think Stevens is overrated.
The reason why Stevens had him take all those 3s from the top of the key instead of corner was because of his inability to get back on defence with his fatass on 60-65% of the times he misses. I already mentioned this once before. There is a reason why Boston is a better defensive team than our team with the so called " defensive minded" coach.

And yet he could get back on defence in spite of spending so much time right under the rim with his team leading offensive rebound rate and 50% of his shots taken within 10 feet of the rim?

Not sure I buy it.
Fair point.
But my assumption would be that when he is shooting from the corner in Boston they didn't have a rebounding threat under the basket so they would have to gang rebound using their guards. That gives transition opportunities for the opposition when there is a long rebound. Easy 2 point on the other side.
Whereas when he is under the basket for rebounds their defensive minded guards are easily back on transition and he is grabbing the boards if they are available. Or when he is shooting from the top of the key, they don't have him chasing rebounds, he shoots and slide back on transition.
Keep in mind that my post has to do with the point someone is preaching here about how Stevens is over rated. I m simply just saying Stevens worked with the personnel he was provided with and made the best out of them.
Sully wasn't set up to make a corner 3 therefore Stevens is not a great coach is a pretty weak argument.

So you think they would have sent guards to the offensive boards instead of just loading up on transition D? Where is the sense in that? To your point, I doubt Stevens would do that.
In any case, I agree that it is a weak argument against Stevens. There are I'm sure loads of reasons why Sully operated in the middle of the court, mostly centering around the specific personnel around him on BOS and the system designed to maximize the team's output, not Sully's. Sully had a pretty high touch rate as well there, as they didn't have a lot of ball handling guards and needed playmaking from other players, and it's tough to initiate plays from the sidelines. We have guards who handle the ball (and the ones we have need the ball all the time) so he'll be used differently here.
I just don't like this narrative of Sully not being able to play in the corner.
Physically best he's looked...please stay this shape (or better)!
I am less scared now when we play against big hulking centre's like Demarcus Cousins, I think Sully could do a nice job with his body to slow those guys down.
He was gobbling up rebounds. Got up and down the floor quite well.
I think JV also grabbed 5 in his 6 minutes on the floor in the first. Raps might be okay with these two guys sharing time together.
It's still too early to decide. I think they'll get eaten alive on def. when the season starts, but we'll see I guess. Everyone looked lazy last night. Pre season y'all.
