  • Everything 2016/17 NBA Draft Thread aka Thank Nation 2.0

I surprisingly did not see a thread anywhere to discuss what is supposed to be a historically deep draft...

Now as most of you know we own potentially (and presumably) 2 first round picks both our own and of course the LAC pick via MIL for Greivis Vasquez hence the "Thank" part of the title which yes is taken from another board.

I just thought I would create this thread as a place for us to discuss not only our opinions on the players we're interested in with our picks but to speak freely just about the players in the draft as well. Of course we also have a 2nd rounder who could be our next Norman Powell....or DeAndre Daniels, who knows?!

Anyways feel free to sound off here....

So I'll offer my own very early on favorites for our picks...

Malik Pope - SF/PF, very similar measurements to Siakam (6'9 heard maybe 6'10 now and 7'2 wingspan) but far more skilled. He's a kid that was initially in conversation to be a top 10 pick in this monster draft but dropped due to an injury which has fully recovered from. He really fits the modern PF mold. Has a nice 3pt shot, can handle the ball, pretty explosive and plays very much like a SF in a PF's body.

Jonathan Jeanne - PF/C, kid has ridiculous measurements (7'2 and 7'6 wingspan) and huge upside but fear not, he doesn't appear to be Bruno Cabaclo 2.0 but more like a Gobert with offence. This kid has a great PER and is proving himself professionally in France. He is very fluid for a player his size, can handle and shoot the ball from the mid-range and has good form that it appears he should be able to extend to the 3pt line. He also is a fairly good passer. He has huge upside and a player I would keep an eye on, big thing is he needs to add strength as he has a slight frame.

OG Anunoby - SF, just seems to fall in line with the kind of picks we've been making lately. He is a 3+D player. His offensive game lacks polish but he has an excellent build, built like a tank and very athletic but has great defensive instincts and isn't a me-first player. Although very premature he is being somewhat likened to Leonard as he can lockdown guards and wings and is 6'8 with a 7'6 wingspan. I really do think there is a good chance we look at him.

Terrence Ferguson - SG/SF, he is a 6'7 guard/forward with insane bounce and a great 3pt shot. The only reason I think he could fall to our pick is because he is going to play internationally due to his grades but he was a real stand out at the McDonald's All American game as he just shot the lights out but the kid has a lot of great raw tools

DJ Hogg - SF, 6'8 forward that is another lights out shooter. The league just seems to be going that way and he seems to be fairly versatile. Looks like a kid with the right attitude and our team obviously seems to be very high on character guys and in desperate need of shooters so I think he could be on our radar

Kostja Mushidi - SG/SF, 6'7 wing that has a good frame. His style of play reminds me of a Pierce. Obviously no one is saying he IS Pierce or will be anywhere near that good but it's just to give an idea of his style of play. He looks very well rounded. Good ball handler, play maker with a fairly decent jumpshot. I can see him fall to end of 1st rd where we'll be or even in the 2nd.

Some HMs that I just doubt will be available when we pick are Bam Adebayo (PF) looks like a Dwight Howard mini me with more range and offensive touch, Lauri Marrkanen (PF/C) an insanely skilled and versatile big man and Isaiah Hartenstein (PF/C) is like Markannen but probably just very slightly less skilled.

Overall I am not one of those posters that believes we should trade these picks for anything short of a YOUNG all-star calibre player because the crazy thing about our team is that we are 50+W team that is almost doing a semi-rebuild because the majority of the roster is fairly young and growing outside of Lowry, Carroll + DD. I would assume that we will start packaging some pieces where we can but I like that we're building assets until we either find the right deal or allow them to develop into good players themselves.

I like anunoby (kinda reminds me of mkg) and Tyler lydon (can't think of a good comp sorta blend of Frye and Deng but even then...). If he can put on some weight, i really like him for raps. Just checked dx and they moved up out of our range since last yr. Board won't change much by June tho right?
Bam, Tatum, giles lots of sick big men at the top of the draft.

Lol yeah if there is one thing I'm sure of, it's that my draft board will change a 1000x...

Personally I don't see MKG in OG because OG is just a lot bigger, stronger looking and most importantly doesn't have a broken/ugly jumper like MKG but I get it defensively because he's aggressive on that side of the basketball as well but again Anunoby has much better length and more athletic so could be far more disruptive.

Also I'm not much of a fan of Lydon, just looks like a spot up shooter imo but I guess we'll see. I don't like his lack of ballhandling and creativity. I don't see where he would be that much of an upgrade over Patterson as I think he has a very similar style of play with perhaps just a better shooting touch which is kinda why I'm currently big on Pope because he seems to have a lot more versatility but also some shooting touch but again a lot can change over the course of a season and kids do work on their game.

Another player that personally I'm not that high on BUT I think our management will like is Jaron Blossomgame. He's a 6'7 SF with great athleticism, strength and a very much improved 3pt shot. Also seems high energy, glue guy with a ton of character. Could pretty much fit the role we were looking for Carroll to handle but physically able to do so. Personally I'd like to take a flyer on someone with a bit more upside but he projects as an excellent role player with a high PER which has become our draft calling card.

I don't think anunobys offense is as bad as mkg but not near Leonard imo. I see the length comp. Leonard is more well rounded top tier. I don't see og reaching that. He's more D first, mkg tier imo but guys can develop shooting so... we will see.
Yeah, lydon can shoot but not put it on the floor and ok rebounder. But hes such a sneaky good defender, so smart, doesn't need the ball but knows how to move without it and what to do when he gets it. Not gonna be a world beater but could fit raps well imo. My biggest concern is that his frame might not add weight and he's better as a 4/3 in NBA, not 3/4.
Wish rabb stayed in draft. I like yak ok tho.

Oh 100% it's not near Leonard's, but keep in mind Kawhi wasn't that great of an offensive player when he came into the league and actually was a poor 3pt shooter. Of course we are no Spurs lol so I certainly wouldn't expect OG to make anywhere near the jump offensively that Kawhi did nor is our offence as selfless to promote his development like SAS did Kawhi but I just think he has more potential than MKG did and does offensively because he has better athleticism, much better measurements (actually longer than both MKG and Leonard, comparible to Bruno) but he has a much more natural looking shot that I see his potential higher than MKG and more along the lines of a poorman's Leonard. But he does seem as ideal of SF as we can hope for that late in the draft and as currently constructed as he easily has the speed, length and size to handle any SF defensively and we wouldn't require to even become as potent as Leonard offensively but just be able to hit the 3 which so far he shoots very well.

But yeah I didn't even think of that with Lydon but that would only further worsen his stock in my books because where he may have the slight edge over Patterson for shooting, PP looks to be a lot more physically stronger and able to guard post players and I find that a bit depressing if the bar is just matching or slightly beating Pat. Again why I'll take Pope at this point because he really looks like he could be a steal as does Jeanne.

Agreed on Rabb, he would have been a slight upgrade over Poeltl. Doubt he slips far enough in the draft for us to grab him in the 20s and not sure yet how far his range extends.

Well, Leonards offense was a surprise so og could do the same but for now I see him as a def specialist. He has length but I think of him mostly for lockdown strength. Kinda like norm but taller. Mkg is 20lbs heavier so I see og filling out like him.
Lydon has positioning and Iq like pat but his length allows him to make sick blocks. Like I have a birds eye view and get surprised. A lot on jumpshots which is less common. Strength and versatility are questions tho.
I don't think rabb is better than poeltl just more of a fit. Could be like bosh lite type.
I've only seen Pope play once. I like him but he was such a high recruit and keeps sliding. Makes me wonder what I don't see? Have to watch him more but Aztecs don't get exposure as much.
Same with euros. Never watch it. Dunno them. Just dx tapes.

I think ill be going to every University of Washington game this year (thank goodness for student passes) so maybe ill know a little bit more about some of these guys this year lol. We've got a few talented guys, most notably Markelle Fultz who is like #1 on DraftExress. Though Cal never comes up hear, USC, Oregon, UCLA and Arizona will have some nice guys.

I can't see Masai holding on to 3 picks.. but I didn't think he'd hold on to both last summer. Hard to find a good trade out there these days. Raptors only real need is a starting caliber PF.. and 2Pat does a good enough job at it.

Outside the box thinking.. but would Dirk want a shot at a ring by coming here? Dallas is trending down and he may want one more shot at it before he retires. Give Dirk one shot at it by coming here.. just needs to beat Lebron (which he's done before) and he knows Casey.

He's making $25M this year, so would need to send back at least $20M in salary. Probably not worth it, and kind of screams of a Hakeem move. But he'd be fun to watch. Carroll/Sully/2017 pick would probably get it done.

If we don't land the coveted pf with these picks it might be possible to move up in the draft. If guys like wright and bebe get mins and actually produce we could have options to package. A team looking for a blend of players that has one pick around 15th might listen. Giannis was picked 15th. Given the tout of this draft, we might be able to get a very good player. Especially with Masai saavy to scoop an under the radar guy when there will be so much hype around certain players in the lottery.
I'm still not in the Lowry win now mode. I see it as jv and dd that are still improving and younger. Lowry and Dmc are good but not good enough and more likely to decline. We have a young team. Especially if norm and or Ross breakout.

So the draft thread was derailed on page one with trade talk and still hasn't recuperated.

After watching some youtube vids he reminds me a bit of Aminu in Portland. Big long athlete who can defend many positions, and is between MKG and Leonard offensively. He and Norm on defense would look absurd.
