If you never take any risks, you can never be criticized. That's why it's interesting that Lowe suggested Masai is overly cautious and likes to really win every trade.

We thought last summer might be time to make a move--remember how much talk there was about the Knicks pick?--and ultimately we ended up with a third string center and more depth. Or as they put it on the podcast, a bunch of young players who don't play.

At some point, if we don't consolidate these assets, they will lose their value (note their discussion of Bruno) and we will be running in place.
See, I don't know if this is as true as it has been historically with the changes to the roster upcoming. In days gone by you were limited by the roster size, plus a couple extra abroad if you were wise like the Spurs. Lifting the roster size effectively to 17 means Masai can draft both their picks this year without having to drop anyone from the roster save Sullinger who would be replaced with a hopefully more generous MLE (ie not shedding value for no return).

My point is that there's not as much urgency to consolidate as there once was. Given the requisite funds to do so, Masai can carry right along on this asset-collection-and-development rampage he's been on. He can make this team even younger without sacrificing it's ability to continue winning in the now - all but ensuring its ability to contend even as Kyle and Lebron's respective careers move into their twilight.

Why? Towns and Lavine are looking like the 2. Wiggins not so much.
If we knew half as much about coaching an NBA team as we think, we"d know twice as much as we do.

Roster expansion is not a simple roster expansion - two of those slots are specifically for two-way D-League contracts. So, not for first rounders, not for players already under contract. If no trades are made and both Lowry and Pat are brought back, the team would have to waive Van Vleet to be able to sign both first rounders.

Oh. Well that kind of stinks.

            Consolidation it is!

Really. you like Zach over Wiggy ?
I don't but interested on why you lean that way...
There's no such thing as a 2nd round bust.

Eye test, shot selection. Lavine attacks the basket and has become a 3 pt threat - over half his attempts from those 2 areas.. Wiggins looks like the old DD - far too many mid-range jumpers. Did you see Wiggins horrible defence in the Nate Duncan breakdown I posted in the NBA thread?

On the other hand,it might not be so cut and dried though. I just found this

                http://www.canishoopus.com/2017/1/2/...ins-and-lavine

Maybe because of their defensive shortcomings, neither will be the 2nd franchise guy, especially if they land a stud in this years draft.

Lots of Raps talk on the new Lowe post podcast.

                  http://cdn16.castfire.com/audio/303/...6src%3Ddesktop

-Lowe: Raps have no shot at 2nd seed
-FINALLY got off the pot and made a deal
-loves Ibaka trade, thinks it'll be even better for us than on paper
-Ibaka did not seem motivated in Orlando
-there is value in not playing bad players, which Patterson injury has forced us to do (Sullinger is out of shape disaster)
-interesting discussion about the value of all-offense, no-defense low post players like Monroe, Vucevic, and... Valanciunas (sometimes okay on D)
-Lowe is less convinced than ever that a defensive stretch 4 can be paired with plodding center, because the 4 is chasing his man on the perimeter, negating shotblocking benefits
-Ibaka + Jonas interesting test case, because our payroll will be huge
-believes we will have to cut salary to avoid tax bill
-Beck: Valanciunas joins pool of essentially unmovable players. Talked to an exec, there is a glut of big men like Monroe, Brook Lopez, all-o, no-d guys, Nets may not even get one first rounder for Lopez
-if you lined up all the all-o/no-d guys like Monroe, Jefferson, Okafor vs all-d/no-o guys like Gobert, Noel etc, execs choose later every time
-Lowe: league is skeptical Raps can dump Carroll without compensation

Interesting that the perception of Jonas seems now squarely in that Monroe/Vucevic group. We may really have missed the boat on getting full value for him, barring some kind of reversal in Casey's playing time/usage of him or a monster playoff run.

This has been a big disappointment in the career development of Jonas. His instincts from a help defender perspective, are almost non-existent.

how could the perception of him be any different?

He is put in the worst possible positions for his limitations by our defensive "scheme", and gets yanked immediately when he fails at it or doesn't cover for the complete lack of effort by the perimeter players.

He isn't a very good defender but the idea that he's a "no defence" guy is fairly overblown and created by the way Casey misuses him.

The difference between a good help defender and a bad one is about half a second in my estimation. half a second is also something you should expect your perimeter defenders to give you, if they actually gave a shit about defence.

Anyways, JV needs to work on reacting to the 1-5 pick and roll fairly exclusively this summer, because that is the glaring weakness. Can he do it? I don't know, but if he does he will easily stay on the floor* because everything else he does is at least average on D, and really good on O.

*if we have a real coach next year

My initial reaction is that JV physically is too limited to become a more agile defender, however if Marc Gasol can do it they why not JV? They seemingly have the same physical profile. Obviously Marc is leagues ahead in basketball IQ, but JV is still young and capable of closing the gap.
