  • Who is on the block first: Triano or Iavaroni?

Who would YOU fire first: Triano or Iavaroni?

    Iavaroni:
I was never on board with the Iavaroni signing. Made no sense to me - he was a 'defensive specialist' who has no history of success on the defensive end from his time with Phoenix to his horrible times in Memphis.

He was brought in to fix out defensive woes, and in his short tenure seems to have done nothing but made them worse. Iavaroni was brought in to design our defence, so I can only think that the blame rests on his shoulders for our constant switches. If the defensive strategy looked good, then Iavaroni would get the credit.

    Triano:
That said: Triano's job is to get his team to play with some effort out there, something the Raps haven't done for a while now. "Maybe" the system is okay, and the players just need to execute it better? If Triano can't get anything from his players, then maybe he needs to go.

    Conclusion:
First, I don't think Colangelo can fire either of them considering they just newly received contracts.

What would I do though, assuming one of them were to be fired? Although I think BC is more inclined to fire Triano so he can promote his buddy Marc Iavaroni, I think that is a mistake. I think that the defensive effort we are seeing out there is part of a vicious cycle. As the losses mount, and defensive scheme continues to fail (After its one marginal success in our first outing, the Suns adjusted to our switching pretty effectively the second time out) the effort will disappear.

    I would fire Iavaroni first.
I mean, the bottom line is I would rather have Triano than Iavaroni running the show. This is saying more about what my opinion of Iavaroni is though.

So what do you guys think?

    Fully agree.

If it quacks like a duck, chances are its a duck.

I know that people want the Canadian coach to succeed. As did I, at first, but it became very clear to me from the get go, that Jay's philosophy was not working.

He can have the best strategies in the world, if he can't implement them so that the players can actually use them what is the point?

I would give it a couple of games, to see how the coaching staff responds to player criticism and if things don't change I would release them both.

I would also pick Iavaroni, mostly because I don't think that BC would want to fire Triano this early into the season the same way he fired Mitchell. Its not that I think things will change but that would make BC look pretty bad.

With that being said, I also don't see the point of Iavaroni. When he was first signed I didn't understand how he was a 'defensive specialist' when you consider (like you mentioned) how horrible the Grizzlies were. I also remember reading a post by a Grizz Blogger/fan saying something about the ridiculous 'defensive schemes' Iavaroni had implemented and he pretty much echoed (if I remember correctly) the same confusion and concern we have with the Raptors defence.

The guy clearly failed at his job, so there's no point of keeping him around. I know that firing an assistant coach wont do much but maybe then we can somehow bribe Lawrence Frank to come (though I see no reason why he would).

BUT, Iavaroni IS BC's buddy sooo...I don't know if that's going to happen.

You fire the head coach. He makes the final calls. He goes down with the ship above all else. If Jay goes down then maybe Marc goes too but the answer is without a doubt Jay Triano. How many times do you see the assistant get axed due to a pathetic showing unless the head coach is going as well?

Your D sucks, you fire the guy that you publicly said is responsible for it. Probably a cheap fire and it's not like it tears the locker room apart.

Jay is the head coach, he's responsible for it.

Another mediocre finding by Colangelo. Seems like if you got an Italian last name and you are a part of the Raptors organisation, your mediocracy is tolerated.

Arse, AltRaps Raps Fan, is there a way to get a Memphis blogger to respond to some of our defensive woes and compare it to see if it is similar to Memphis and Iavaroni's history?

Both Iavaroni and Triano are Colangelo's tools/yes-men so I doubt either gets fired unless the team continues to spiral out of control and Jay loses full control of the locker room...

I don't think BC would fire either for simply underperforming because a) they both recently signed fresh new deals as the OP pointed out; and b) Colangelo won't find better puppets than these two, with guaranteed no rebelling scenario like what we say with Smitch and Babcock.

The only way anyone gets fired is if the players continue to call out the strategies and approaches, and at that point I'd guess Triano gets the axe simply because Iavaroni was brought in as backup insurance anyways.

                  My two cents of course.

There is rarely any point in ever firing an assistant coach and eating his salary.
Jay would just assign him to scouting.

A NEW Head Coach might fire an assistant coach. So Iavaroni's job isn't all that secure right now, unless he's the new Head Coach (cringe).
