  • Hollinger Thinks The Raptors Are Losers

Latest from Hollinger talking about our offseason.
I think we did good in the draft, lost Turk and now since, we all figured anyways, Bosh quit on us, did we really do that bad? Yeah the Charlotte thing and the Matt Barnes stuff was crap but I still think the scale tips a little better for us.

Losing Bosh was bad enough, but that wasn't the only thing in Toronto that left us scratching our heads. The whole Matt Barnes saga was jaw-dropping: It appears both Barnes' agent and the Raptors' front office leaked to the media that Barnes would sign a two-year, $9 million deal with the Raptors in a sign-and-trade -- in fact, every major outlet reported it.

Only one problem: The deal wasn't even remotely legal under the salary-cap rules, revealing a shocking ignorance of a very important piece of the business on the part of NBA professionals.

Look, this is pretty basic stuff. I've seen stories suggesting this was some inscrutable piece of salary-cap arcana, and it's just not true. For starters, a sign-and-trade deal has to be at least three years. Has to. That's not a difficult rule to understand. I'm pretty sure all of you got it immediately. That's why every single sign-and-trade deal that any of these guys has ever done has been for at least three years. You'd think they'd at least know from experience. But right there, much energy was spent negotiating a deal that couldn't happen.

Second, Orlando couldn't sign-and-trade Barnes under those terms. He had no Bird rights because he had played only one year on his current contract; the most he could be offered by the Magic this season was about $1.9 million. Again, this isn't some obscure footnote; it comes up every single year because so much of the league's rank and file are on one-year deals.

Finally, Orlando could have re-signed Barnes using its midlevel exception, except that (A) the Magic had already used it, and (B) you can't do a sign-and-trade using the midlevel exception. Toronto couldn't use its midlevel on Barnes either, since it had already been bestowed on Linas Kleiza.

In a nutshell, the deal had to be a sign-and-trade for at least three years, starting at no more than $1.9 million a year, or it couldn't happen. This was obvious to anyone with any knowledge of the salary-cap rules. That it wasn't to the two parties involved is disturbing.

When the Raptors weren't trying to use imaginary exceptions to sign players they couldn't get, they were giving Amir Johnson a five-year, $34 million deal that's among the summer's most questionable. They used their midlevel exception on Kleiza, adding another bad defender to the league's worst defensive team.

Toronto did salvage a Hedo Turkoglu-Leandro Barbosa trade that dumps last year's big mistake, albeit for another guy who can't guard anybody. Unfortunately, an offseason-saving steal of a deal with Charlotte fell through, and they're left with a star-less team that still is the worst defensive squad in basketball.

We are losers. We haven't done anything in quite some time. They're right. Nothing to get upset over though. Hopefully these "press-clippings" are kept to provide motivation.

+1 to MangoKid. It's time to move on as a fanbase and develop a bit thicker skin. This team is going to look bad before it looks good. And if Amir and Bargnani don't improve, it's going to look really bad, no matter what else BC has done this summer.

We lost this offseason, whether Bosh was a franchise player or not. It happens.

Couldn't agree more. Not being a pessimist, but as of this point, we are losers, although not to the extent that Hollinger points - we're definitely going to take a huge step back in the win column, but I have gained a lot of respect for BC this summer - in the worst of situations, he's really work his tail off to bring this club back up again.

The way Hollinger is saying it, almost sounds like its something personal.

The team was built around CB4 and since CB4 left, of course the whole strategy is up in the air with Kleiza and Barbosa replacing Bosh and Hedo. Raptors has too many unknown variables at this moment and assuming the worst (record wise) for the next season is something that Raptors fans are already accepting. It will be fun watching Raptors games (young players developing) and painful in the same time (losing)!

anyone who says we are "losers" should shut the f**k up and go be a fan of another team.

the season hasn't even started yet, you are a bunch of whiny b*tches if you are already dooming us for the season.

look at poor Minny, they won 15 games last year, or worse, the nets, clippers ,etc.. We are not even close to as bad.

just cause some loser on espn says we are bad you are going to take the same mentality.

This season will be awesome, why cast a shadow over it before it has started. probably a bunch of depressed Bosh ball washers. go to south beach and party with that tranny if u r so fed up with your hometown team.

The Raptors right now are losers. We, the fans, are not. It's not our fault. Until MLSE starts writing my pay cheques I will never use "we".

Who said anything about being fed up with this team? Relax, homeboy.
If you think this team will be good this season, you're going to be very disappointed. We're very green, still very much young with a lot to learn. We're not going to win very many games. Still a lot of holes on this team. Still have defensive deficiencies. I'm just not trying to look at this with rose coloured glasses. Instead, I'm looking at this with realistic expectations and realize that this is a process.
Edit: I don't think we're as good as the Nets or Clippers.

its funny how this hollinger guy fails to mention that barnes posted on twitter he was signing with the raps, just paints it like a leak from MLSE, he also fails to recognize that the media are always saying things are done deals & reporting them before the deals are even close to being complete all in the hopes of being the guy who "BROKE THE NEWS FIRST"

agreed though that if the roster stays the same as it is now well all be breaking out the Craptors jerseys this year LOL
