  • Does Anyone Know What Calderon's Contract Was When He Signed It In July 2008?

I cant remember anyone ever saying that it was worth close to $10 million per year.

I have some sources which even say that it was a 5 year deal worth between 7.5 and 8.5 million per season...

Does anyone have the breakdown year per year?

also this contract i hope breaks one of two beliefs raps fans have,

    1. did jose demand this much money ? if so, do you still think he is such a "nice guy who loves toronto ?"

    or

    2. was BC's first offer to calderon a contract where he makes almost $10 million per year ? I hope BC at least started with a lower number... we didnt need to over pay calderon did we ? he doesnt have a preference over usa or canada that we need to over compensate for...

please if anyone can provide some info that would be great... thanks.

EDIT: and why does even jose who we are all led to believe loves this city and the franchise get a 10% trade kicker ? so now if we trade him, jose gets an extra $3 million.

did bc just throw that in, or did jose demand that a trick kicker is included ??

You can extrapolate the salary backwards a year using the same percentage used going forward.

He was signed to a 5 year-$40 million deal. But what most people don't realize is that doesn't mean $8 million per year. It starts out lower.

As for the trade kicker - trade kickers are actually very common in the NBA. However, they are usually used to convince a player that the team wants to keep them long term. If Jose was dedicated to TO and loved the city, he would want a trade kicker.

This is the third or fourth time I've seen a post like this from you and I think you're overexagerating just how bad Calderon's contract is. It's ugly, but not to the magnitude in which you're making it seem.

Is he overpaid? Yeah sure...In hindsight, he's more of of a Mid-level type of guy in the ~$5 million dollar range. But this isn't Stephon Marbury or Tracy McGrady we are talking about where he's making an INSANE amount of money for the stats he's producing, nor is he a Jerome James where we're paying him 6 or 7 million a year to literally do nothing but sit on the bench.

When Calderon inked that deal he was a top 5 assist guy in the NBA and had the best assist/turnover ratio in the league. There was even some buzz around the league that he got jerked for the All Star team that year, and he played so well that TJ Ford became expandable. I'd say his value was right around the 8 million/year mark which he ended up getting.

Did he make more money last year then he deserved? Sure... but you can say that about a ton of guys around the league. I really think you're blowing it out of proportion.

he was also only playing 20-25 mpg.

30.3 mpg, and that actually makes the top 5 assist stat more impressive.

given that yes but his best year was the division winnign one where t.j. was healthy.

No, his best statistical season, where he even had some rumours of being a borderline all-star candidate, was when TJ went down with the Horford-inflicted neck injury. Which was, of course, his contract year - and I believe the thought process was that Jose should make what TJ was making - so that was what his starting salary was - 8 million.
