  • Can't Jay or the players do anything about this 3-pt shot problem?

Maybe they should just stop taking them, or limit certain players attempts. Maybe they should drill more on this shot during practices.

I think this is a serious issue. The Raptors are by far the worst team on the league for 3-pt shooting at 31.2%. The next worst is Memphis at 33.1% while the best is Golden State at 40%. So, Toronto is worse than the second worst by much more than a quarter of the difference (about two sevenths) between the second worst and the best. In other words, they are probably shooting the three worse than many high school teams in the US.

A look at culprits: Derozan has wasted 23 attempts while sinking just 2. Weems has missed 29 while hitting on just 9. Bayless is just 21 for 68 (~31%). At this rate, he should be banned from taking them since he's obviously trigger happy but actually a pretty good penetrator. Kleiza was similarly bad, but we won't be seeing any more from him.

Bargnani and Barbosa have been mediocre, but the team needs them to try for scores one way or another. I think they get immunity from this critique.

Calderone has been pretty darn good, draining threes at almost 40% efficiency while taking that shot one time in five.

Am I wrong in thinking this is one of the key reasons for their ineptness? Think of all the close games they have lost this season. Shouldn't they at least try to sign a three point artist to a ten-day contract, just to have that weapon ready in a close game?

It's an interesting conundrum. You'd think a team this terrible defensively would be a good 3-pt shooting team. Guess we showed them.

Can't BC do anything about it?

He should through a tonne of money at a one-dimensional 3-point specialist in the off-season. I mean, what could go wrong?

DeRozan takes less than one three point attempt per two games. He's not a culprit. He knows his game and just doesn't go there unless he absolutely has to. I would not change a thing about how DeRozan is developing. Teams who rely heavily on the 3 point shot don't win rings.

One thing missed in the first post is the fact that the Raptors take the second fewest attempts per game from behind the arc. This is not that big an issue. They're changing their style and I'm down with that.

Is it that much of a problem? We need guys to slash and take it to the hole, and who have decent midrange games. If that can be done, I'd be happy.

Yes it is. No perimeter shooting success leads to opposing teams to sag on interior defense. It's partially the reason I think why Jose took those long range shots after the team got those offensive rebounds (some lucky). Unfortunately they all clanged.

We gotta work on our scoring from the inside out. Derozan and Amir need to be given the ball a bit more in inside situations so guys like Calderon, Bayless, Barbosa and Bargnani can get better open looks. And Bargnani needs to really start making his shots.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to actually try to set up Trey Johnson for a few corner 3's. I mean, we signed him, might as well test out all his abilities right?

You absolutely need guys like DD, Barbosa, Weems, even Bargs continue taking it to the rim and have the decent mid range game. But an effective 3 point game has got to be part of a teams offensive scheme if they are to have a successful offense.

If the defending teams know there is little to no threat from the arc, than in all likelihood they'll start dumping their guys in the paint protecting the rim-which makes it that much harder for the team to score.

There's got to be a balnce-somewhere in between Orlando, who jack up shats all day and where they currently sit.

This is the shotchart from the Atlanta game, and it my mind is summarizes the biggest problem with this offense. Not that they are unable to sink a 3, but that since their 3-point shooting has tried up, they've gone to the long 2 as the thing that makes or breaks their offense. Honestly, is there any offensive strategy more doomed to failure? Not that it's exactly a strategy: it's what happens when the team has no confidence in their 3-point shooting and little willingness to go inside (granted, they did a very good job of getting to the line against Atlanta). If you're on defense and you make the other team step inside the 3-point line then shoot a jumper, you're doing exactly what you want.
Last night, even though they did far worse in shooting percentage, I thought they were doing better at getting the shots that they wanted. The same was true against Minnesota. They seemed more willing to shoot the 3, which was drawing defenders out, and creating more room in the interior to get better looks.
Basically, even though this team sucks at 3-point shooting right now, they can't give up on it or the rest of their offense will struggle as well. I'd hate to see them go after a three-point specialist free agent during the offseason, but picking up a second-rounder and finding a young shooter that they can develop as an off-the-bench specialist of their own (Klay Thompson comes to mind) wouldn't be a bad approach.

The Spurs, Gregg Popovich, their last three championships and their 43-8(?) record would like to hear more about your theory.

You don't have to rain 3s to win in the NBA but you also can't win when you have no outside threats. There is a reason the Heat signed Eddie House and Mike Miller, Dallas wanted Peja, the Lakers signed Blake, the Spurs sign 3pt shooters, the Bulls got Korver, and on and on. You can't slash and get to the hole or post-up effectively if the other team has five players standing in the paint.
