The thing is, guys like Batum (multi-faceted players) come at a much steeper asking price, than say a 3 point specialist like Reddick.
True, but if we need to player, let's get the player. I could argue that we could trade the entire starting lineup for LBJ and we would be a better team. I know being a GM is complicated, but if you find a player that you need, you need to get him, because your team will be better. Basketball is pretty easy to read that way for the most part, unlike any other sport where there is a lot of luck/streakiness involved.

For example, if we get Reddick for a "good price", we know what we have, and that's a guy whose not going to be a difference maker. At the same time, if we made a push for Batum at slightly more expensive, we have a guy who can do a bunch of things, and is getting better. We have to get players like that no matter the cost if we want to win

I was speaking more so from a cap perspective. I agree that ownership needs to open up their wallets. But if we use all our cap space on 1 player, then addressing other areas of need becomes a little tougher.

I'm not suggesting passing on Batum. I'm just presenting the "cons" to go along with the "pros".

via free agency, i'd look at:

            Steve novak (29)- 2.5/5.2 - .472
            ersan ilyasova (25)- .9/1.9 - .455
            danny green (25) - 1.5/3.5 - .436
            courtney lee (27) - 1.5/3.7 - .401
            nicolas batum (24) - 1.8/4.6 - .391
            leandro barbosa (30) - 1.0/2.7 - .382
            o.j. Mayo (25) - 1.5/4.2 - .364
            kirk hinrich (31) - 1.0/2.8 - .346

danny green is the guy i think the raptors will be looking at hard.

            Via trade, i'd look at:

            Ben gordon (28) - 1.2/2.8 - .429
            jj redick (28) - 1.7/4.1 - .418
            marvin williams - (26) - 1.0/2.6 - .389
            wesley matthews (26) - 2.0/5.1 - .383
            dorell wright (27) - 1.7/4.8 - .360
            kevin martin (28) - 2.0/5.6 - .347

some of the guys via trade would have to have other young players or picks coming along with them. They might not be reasonable or feasible.
ersan ilyasova - harder than hard.

Ersan Ilyasova, Steve Novak, and O.J Mayo really catch my eye.

I'd rather Barbosa back than Williams. Barbosa is loved by all on roster and would come cheaper than Williams.

I threw Steve Novak in but he really is a situational player in my opinion worth no more than $2M per year (basically the bi-annual exception).

Someone from the Spurs. They can all shoot. lol

In all seriousness, I wouldn't want the Raptors to just bring in 3 point specialists. They at least need to have some other dimension the team can work with.

George Hill, Randy Foye, Patty Mills, J.J Redick, Alan Anderson, James Anderson, Brandon Rush, Danny Green, & Anthony Parker are some options.

Maybe the Spurs comment was a little accurate, now that I think about it.

                    • Marvin Williams is someone the Raptors could definitely get and may be the type of player Colangelo is targeting with our extra cap space. We could trade the Barbosa TPE for Marvin straight up, and probably get them to send us their first round pick next year (they have to keep this years) for taking on Marvins contract. Atlanta desperately needs to clear cap in order to try and resign Josh Smith, and outside of Joe Johnson, Marvin has the worst contract on the team. Marvin is one of the best defenders at SF in the league, and he is also an excellent shooter. While I don't think he will play up to his full contract value, he would be a solid starter on the Raptors squad, and he is actually get-able, unlike a lot of the guys that are being thrown around. Marvin is also still fairly young and I think his growth as a player was stunted by the horrible coaching in Atlanta (Woodson and Drews are both awful). He could blossom a bit in Toronto, especially if we get Nash as well. The goal for next season is the playoffs, and this definitely looks like a playoff team to me.

                      PG: Nash, (Marshall/Lillard/Bayless?)
                      SG: Derozan (Barbosa?/Beal/Lamb?)
                      SF: Williams, Johnson, Kleiza
                      PF: Bargnani, Davis, Amir
                      C: Jonas, Gray, Alabi

The team also maintains good cap flexibility in this scenario. It's not ideal but it is realistic.

                        • I actually think he's a highly underrated player because he blends in and quietly does a little of everything. He's a glue guy. They never get the respect they deserve.

Marvin Williams is the kind of player who could be productive in any system. His player option in a years time is roughly equal to the final year of Amir Johnson's contract. For him to come here I think Amir would have to be outbound. I don't know if that's much more than a lateral move in terms of strictly looking at talent.

                          • Amir needs to be moved no matter what happens, or possibly amnestied if we can move Calderon. There are not enough minutes at PF and C for Bargs, Davis, Jonas, Gray, Kleiza, Magloire. Marvin fills a need at least as a shooter and SF and I find his play to be slightly more valuable than amir. He also fits Caseys wants as a hard working veteran with lots of playoff experience.

                            • Amir is a productive young player with lots of experience and a reasonable contract. Why on earth would you consider just giving away such an asset? We're not talking about Gilbert Arenas here (ie: questionable person, horrible contract when he was amnestied). I would imagine there is a good market for Amir Johnson.

                              • I hope you're right about there being a good market for amir. Just don't want to take back any bad contracts to move him. We may have to amnesty Calderon unless Utah (okur tpe) or a team with cap space wants him in order to make room for Nash without adding salary.
