  • Mo money, mo money!

I was glancing at the NBA team salaries on hoopshype while waiting for this beating in Utah to end and I noticed that the Raps have to fifth lowest payroll in the league. If you look at the bottom 10 teams in terms of payroll you'll find that only three of them (Milwaukee, Houston, and Minnosota) are in the playoffs and that those 3 teams are all 7th or 8th seeds. What does that tell you?

We should have know when this season started we didn't have a chance, this team hasn't landed a big free agent since Hedon't Turkeyglue and as long as we keep on not bringing in good, established, players we are going to lose. If we have to massively overpay to have a chance at some talent than we should do it. You can't get better by just amassing picks, every team that has rose up from obscurity, from OKC to the Clippers, have done by adding the right pieces to surround their picks, usually through free agency. BC is completely at fault for this one, there is no excuse for failing to bring back any decent free agents in 5 years.

I'll just point out that you say a team needs to spend to acquire winning calibre talent, and can't just amass picks. Then you cite OKC and LAC, two teams that before their recent success had been bad a lot of the time for many years now, and thus amassed picks like crazy in order to accomplish what they are now (especially OKC). This is where I find your argument flawed. It's not that Toronto hasn't spent money to try and add pieces, it's that we haven't had a good enough core to add pieces to anyway. And we still don't. JV and Demar might be such pieces, but at this stage in their development, adding another all-star hardly guarantees anything. That's why BC was selling it as (who knows if he actually convinced even himself of it) an internal growth year that should still be a step forward. If the team had this core and won even 35-40 games, it would validate what BC is doing, and even make them think that they are ready to add an all-star to the mix. It hasn't worked out that way, and pretty much every part of the core is in question except JV and Demar, and the latter would be if he hadn't shown some all-around improvement.

We can't spend... we need to convert our picks in this market and find our own stars and pay them to stay.

Our GM when he first got here, pissed our picks away by making short sighted moves, and it created a talent drought. We traded a pick for James Johnson and then gave him away for nothing. We are horrible at getting talent through the draft. Trading picks and overspending on marginal talent, is the wrong strategy for this market.

We should never trade our picks, its the only security we have, both in cheap rookie contracts and Bird rules. Bryan Collangelo is a duffus.

I honestly don't know how Kelly and Bryan still have their jobs, this team is a mess.

When you look at teams that are actually close to making the playoffs, none of them have done it by drafting. Look at Houston, right now they are the eighth seed in the west and there team is built on free agent signings and trade acquisition. I'm not saying that it isn't great to have high picks and get talent from that, and in some cases that may even work as a way to build your team, but at this point we probably won't have our pick this year and none of the players we have been drafting look like they are going to be superstars. How much longer are we going to keep grabbing picks and failing to actually get better? Why not try to work some trades and throw some money at a middle of the road kind of player and build from that?

The clippers would still be terrible if they hadn't signed guys like Chris Paul and Jamal Crawford, and that's with a superstar player like Blake being drafted. The Wizards, the Kings, the Cavaliers, the Raptors.... all teams that have been in the lottery with high picks and continue to suck. Who continue to try to build a "core" through the draft and continue to fail.

Where did the assets come to trade? The 2 biggest chips were a draft pick (unfortunately Toronto's!) and Lamb (just drafted).
