So they're lying too? They've just disrespected their own player and now they're lying about it?

        • A few points.

          1. Most of the deals mentioned really aren't overpays. Shaun Livingston wasn't an overpay: he's worth $5m easily, especially on a team like Golden State where they already have spacing. Ben Gordon isn't really an overpay: because of the team option second year, it's a one-year $4.5 million gamble to see if a former nearly-All-Star can regain his form (and it's not like Orlando doesn't have tons of money to spend anyway). Avery Bradley got $8m for the same reason DeMar got $9m - the Celtics are betting he can improve where he's not great (shooting) and like where he's good (defense, playmaking), and frankly it's a better bet that he improves than it was to bet on DeMar getting good at the harder parts of basketball considering Bradley has a bigger skillset than DeMar did two years ago.

Marcin Gortat's deal was only slightly an overpay - really, it's the fifth year that made everybody blink. At four years and 48m nobody would be saying anything because Gortat is a rock-solid center and should be for at least three more years. The only major overpay thus far has been Jodie Meeks, and Detroit desperately, desperately needs perimeter shooting and Meeks does that very well. (BTW: If we want to offload Novak, we should look at Detroit.) Everything else is rumours and conjection.

          2. I think people also overrate Greivis and 2Pat, which is understandable because we've seen them and we know they're good players, but the league has plenty of good players available. Greivis is ranked #30 on CBS' ranked board of free agents and Patterson is #45, and neither of them is even the premium backup available at their position: Greivis was the third-best backup PG behind Livingston and Rodney Stuckey, and Patterson is way back in the pack for power forwards - he's ranked behind Boris Diaw, Jordan Hill, and Mike Scott (and given their ages, you can make the case that Pau Gasol and Shawn Marion are backup PFs now as well).

Neither is the most attractive name at their position as a backup, and frankly, you have to consider what teams are looking for backups right now. With Greivis, the only realistic non-Toronto suitors are Detroit, Chicago, and maybe Dallas or Charlotte; there aren't any other teams who can afford him and/or don't just want to develop younger players on cheap deals instead (and only Detroit isn't going to complicate matters by hunting for a max player at first). With 2Pat, your likely suitors are Detroit, Phoenix, Atlanta and maybe Utah - and all of them would likely prefer Channing Frye instead. (Phoenix definitely would.) And Detroit - the only team interested in both of our RFAs - wants to trade for guys rather than sign them in the hopes that they can move Josh Smith (or, worst-case scenario, sign-and-trade away Greg Monroe). If they move Smith to Sacramento (as is rumoured may happen) they'll be taking back at least one power forward in the bargain.

I think the only way we don't re-sign Greivis and 2Pat for a combined less-than-$10m per year is if Masai decides he doesn't want them back, frankly.

Or it could just be miscommunication between different people in the front office and they thought they had asked him.

                  1. Totally agree with your overpay statements

                  2. Its not that we over rate them. For instance Patrick Patterson is much more valuable to this team than a Jordan hill. He fits in perfectly with his perimeter shooting, defence and rebounding.
Vasquez brings that swagger and confidence that everyone loves. He goes out and competes. D.J. had no confidence. Vasquez loves and reps Toronto which makes him even more important to bring back.

It's not the religion thing...but Lin always came across like a decent and character (and team) guy. If some of these team managers could blowjob some of these high end f/as during the dog and pony shows they'd probably do it.

                        • Another point about deals looking like overpays is that the salary cap is likely to keep going up the next few years, so although these numbers may have seemed outrageous 5 years ago they're more reasonable now.
