  • The bench success is really weird. Like, the past two seasons it's basically been the Raps having great depth, and always playing a star with the bench, outclassing their opposition.

Now this season the Raps barely play their stars with the bench, and especially not Lowry (who had the most success there), and Patterson and CoJo are gone, two key contributors to the bench success - and once again, the bench units are really good, in spite of seeming like their only offensive option is Miles taking a somewhat contested three every possession.

This feels like one of he things we can nail down as a Casey strength. Like, we can trumpet the depth Masai has assembled all we like (and we should) but the bench units over the past 4 seasons have all looked pretty radically different from each other. And they all kick ass, some against all logic. Credit has to go to coach on this one I think. And if he can keep the bench producing for most of the season and that keeps Lowry healthy for the playoffs, that is an immeasurable contribution to the team's chances.

It's because we now have a 'home grown' bench unit who have played with eachother in the D-league for multiple years. Siakim, Poetl, Wright, FVV have chemistry as a unit. Before, our bench was good because we brought in good players, but this year we are unleashing a product thats been a few years in the making. Masai has long term vision. Farming talent. Love it.

Masai definitely taking some notes from soccer with that strategy. It's common for teams to develop a lot of players in their own academies and bring them through the first-team's ranks as they improve.

        • Kyle's shooting stroke is back, and he's starting to look comfortable in the new offense.

DanH was right. Shaolin was wrong.

              • Here's the question. Is Fred VanVleet like a slightly shorter, younger version of Kyle Lowry? What do you guys think? Imagine the possibilities if this is true

Slightly shorter, significantly worse version of Kyle.

Slightly shorter, way way way way way way way worse at every single thing that has to do with basketball.

VanVleet is the player you would create in nba2k if you just copied lowry and then subtracted 15 points off every rating

He’s the player you end up with if you built a myplayer that you wanted to end up like Kyle but didn’t have any VC to spend so you’re stuck with the base player.

                          • VanVleet is pretty good for a 2nd yr undrafted FA playing meaningful minutes.
If we knew half as much about coaching an NBA team as we think, we"d know twice as much as we do.

Okay, sure. But I mean. Fred VanVleet is in his second year in the league. How good was Lowry in his second year? Or even when he was in his fourth year, when he was VanVleet's age? He couldn't even shoot the three

Lowry was significantly better in his 2nd year in the league than VanVleet is now, and dramatically better by his age 23 season. By basically every measure.

Guys, we can appreciate VanVleet for what he is (best third string PG in the league, decent backup, hard worker, high energy, very limited young player) without making comparisons to all-NBA superstar guards that do no one any favours.
