  • Love the Lowry signing! Legacy contract and a thank you for winning the chip with a busted hand.

    • Fuck yes, I want to see Lowry retire here. And a big one-year deal makes it pretty obvious what Masai’s doing hahaha

What are the rules on Pascals contract if it’s not a max, can they make year 2 lower than other years to free up a bit more space and then have year 3/4 take a jump?
Each year can only increase or decrease from the previous year by 8% of the first year salary. So if Pascal makes 29M (25% of the cap) next summer, each year can only be different from the previous one by 2.32M in either direction. So the 2nd year could drop to 26.68M, then the third year back up to 29M, and then 31.32M and 33.64M. Can't offer a 5th year in an extension unless they give him max raises every year, could tack a 5th year on (35.96M) if they wait for next summer to sign the deal.

For comparison, Pascal's max over 5 years is 5/170M. Offering the 5 years with the 2nd year dip drops that to 5/150M. A max offer from another team next summer would be 4 years, 125M. And the 4 year offer the Raps could make now on an extension with the 2nd year dip is 4/116M. Pretty close to what another team could offer, but maybe you have to throw him a player option in the 4th year to get him to agree.

Good news is, if they wait, that 116M over the first 4 years is close enough to what other teams can offer that tacking on the 5th year player option (34M) and guaranteeing Pascal 150M while giving him that control at the end of the deal could make the 2nd year dip look appealing to him.

            • So many puckhead hot takes about this being too much money.

This is money that Gordon Hayward, Tobias Harris, Mike Conley, etc. also get paid. Lowry's a 5x All-Star, an NBA Champ, and anyone who thinks $30m on a very team-friendly term isn't a good deal - well that person is straight up just not paying attention. This does the Raptors right this year, next year, and the offseason after that. Masai knows how to set shit up.

Well to me it signals several things:
                • FVV contract situation gets more interesting. If he doesn't look like he will be able to fill Lowry's shoes... he may actually be the odd man out by the end of this year. For example including him and serge for brad beal. Either way, it signals that they don't have the point guard of the future.
                • It is very very team-friendly as you alluded too and Masai has shown his willingness to pay but
                • It signals their understanding that having a playmaking guard like lowry and another ball handler like Gasol on the floor is important. I agree. I also agree with specifically having a frontcourt playmaker, and a backcourt playmaker at the same time. It gives you multiple options and looks and you have "floor generals" or "floor coaches" available on the front line and back lines of the offense and defense.
                • To my last point, this will help guys like OG and Pascal with their development.
                • Shows me Lowry's commitment to Toronto and desire to stay. I understand that he obviously wants to win above all, but now that he has won a chip I think he also gets more comfortable staying here while pursuing the next thing.
                • Allows definitively keeps are cap space open for one more year while allowing us to come out from under the luxury tax level. This means when we do go for the big free agents (giannis and olidipo are likely to be prime targets) we can spend freely without worrying about being a repeater team. It also means we don't have to give up assets or flexibility unnecessarily. We weren't likely to get a solid pick from Lowry or the players necessary to make the salary work.

It means that OKC proposition has sat heavily in the minds of the front office and they are more inclined to deal FVV than pay him Rozier money.

Unless they pay him Rozier money anyways and they use him as our "starting shooting guard" until 2021/2022

Not NBA calibre. Even as a backup. He shows some flashes here and there.... but FVV is way better off-ball as a wide open, spot-up shooter.... aka.... shooting guard.
