So apparently after game 5 his elbow was all swollen again. Hopefully these few days off will help settle it down.

Or they drain it. As I recall he was very good for a couple game right after draining it before the effects started to show again. Not sure what sort of long term effect multiple drainings has though.

    • One thing is forsure, his shot is definitely broken. He must know that, in practice and shootaround the same thing? So in almost honesty, why keep shooting?

        Keep the defense honest?

Safe to say, he should have rested the elbow injury, as evidenced by his shooting.
No proof that resting it would have helped.

Yeah, except there isn't..... except in the minds of all the doctors and other assorted medical professionals on this message board who know better than the legion of doctors and athletic trainers and specialists at the disposal of a billion dollar company because one guy had bursitis once and it felt better after some rest, plus WebMD says so....

Right because not resting it has worked out fantastic so far as far as his shooting is concerned. Actually resting it; not even worth a shot.

For rest.. you need a couple of weeks for the swelling to go down with training. And even so, if he happens to hit it again it could come back. Its a weird injury.

So should we assume his elbow is fucked for the rest of his life? If rest won't get it back to normal, what will?

This is the same medical staff watching over DeMarre Carroll, whose surgeon was reported (by DeMarre) to be shocked that he hadn't had the surgery on his knee well before the point that he saw the surgeon.

They are not infallible. We have mountains of evidence, even restraining that evidence to Lowry himself these past couple years, that this team and their medical staff are extremely capable of screwing up injury recovery.

I really don't think the question is if rest will get his elbow back to normal. With prolonged rest, treatment and rehab, this kind of injury can be overcome and not be a chronic issue that will affect his shot long-term.

The question lies in whether resting the elbow when the injury arose for the couple of weeks that were available for rest would have had any measurable impact on the injury healing in time for the playoffs? The answer appears to be no.

And from working with surgeons on a regular basis, I can tell you that one doctor's opinion on a matter is just that.

                        • I think Lowry has a break out game on Friday. He work to hard to keep struggling like this.

But the injury first occurred in January. And he proceeded to top the NBA in minutes after that. Was there no time to rest him then?

How exactly does the answer appear to be no? We didn't rest him, and his shot is still fucked, so I'd say the answer is either Yes or at least Maybe. The answer to whether letting him play through it will result in his shot getting back to form is clearly a firm NO. We had the playoff spot locked up and we have two very capable PGs behind Lowry, we should have rested him to give his elbow the best chance possible of healing up for the playoffs.

                              • Even with the injury, which is visibly affecting him, the numbers are a bit weird since January.

His monthly %'s were fine, initially. January and February were actually his best months of the year for FG%. March and April were right in line with his Oct-Dec numbers. His 3PT% was also fine Jan-April - 37-40% the whole time. Only FT showed a steady monthly decline from the time of the injury.

His shooting has fallen off a cliff just in this series. Did he re-injure the elbow and make it worse? Has the Pacers' D thrown his shot off? He talked himself about rushing his shot too much this series.
