Demo, it IS a business. There will be a careful examination of the numbers. It might be that the financial analysts decide that going into tax to the tune of spending $40 - $50 million to retain Norman's services next year (or Danny's or Fred's) makes sense based on estimated revenues for the coming season of based on further cementing the fanbase for coming years if they don't win a championship. Or if Rogers and Bell see a large enough return on the broadcast side to offset the expense of the Basketball side. I don't have the numbers. But if the owners aren't taking steps to maximise profit, the stockholders could oust the board and upper management and install a different board and management team. Watching the value of their stock, or their dividends go down will not make stockowners happy. I don't know if saying "But everybody loves the team" will be a significant replacement for lost dollars.

The alternative is to get some single billionaire owner to buy out Rogers and Bell and then just do stuff to make himself feel good and allow him to hang out with NBA players. That doesn't always turnout well.

I haven't seen Dan saying "The team should do this or the team should do that." He has been couching in terms of "If the team wants to achieve this particular financial target it needs to take these actions, and here is the actual impact of moving this player or that player."

So not sure what your beef is. Everybody, Dan included, seems to be fine with MLSE spending whatever they want, and is supportive of anything that they do that continues providing us with excellent basketball. He simply seems to be cautioning about what to expect.
One very important aspect of the current situation that doesn't get enough consideration is that the financial 'bump' into serious luxury tax territory is short term. The following year maybe 1 player is guaranteed. 2020-21 season everyone of the big contracts come off the books. That and the moves made to build a championship roster were all approved by MLSE ownership with the full understanding of the future 2019-20 financial implications. Big picture, Masai has the full backing of ownership to run with the current roster which could include Kawhi with a max deal - hopefully. MLSE ownership are smart guys and Mr. LT did not just wake up after the championship party and ask "hey, how much does this all cost"? ...

The 2nd two sound like patrick Beverley and either jj Reddick or Danny green. Probably Reddick. Lebron, AD is more intriguing than sick Embiid and simmons

russell back to LA, Kyrie to Brooklyn, Kemba to Boston would be an interesting point guard carousel. Only team shafted is Charlotte, shocker. Lol

Is Fred suggesting meetings with 2 players, one a defensive specialist and the second a lights out shooter OR players that combine both qualities?

                • so apparently Durant's declined his player option for next season (opting in was a possibility as a result of his injury).

Green makes sense but he makes sense for a lot of teams. I can see Lebron and Paul wanting to re-create a mix of the Cavs/Heat teams he won with but you also need the right optics in LA.

Also, you don't know if guys will take less money to go to the Lakers. If that happens, then all bets are off.

Time to play the game .... "What would Masai have done?"

Caveat: Kawhi not in the picture ...Raps seeking a top 5 player

... would he woo KD to sign up with the Raptors regardless of the first redshirt year
                      ... pass on KD

I think (hope) he would have taken a run at him in healthy FA and Durant would have snubbed him unfortunately.
Now with the injury situation, I think Masai would be the one to take a pass as he will even if Kawhi moves on ..... which he won't

                        • Teenage girls have nothing on the NBA MSM and their "sources" as they both gossip on other folks intentions.
Just a few more days to go until the players re-up or move on...

For context on Jimmy Butler heading to Houston.
Darryl Morey barely has more than table stakes in the game this year but he knows how to work the media. .
He has two trade assets in Capella and Gordon.
                          He has his firsts.
                          He is capped out.
He is carrying an old pain in the ass player in Paul who has 3 more years on a 40 plus M$ AAV deal that no one beyond the age of 4 would think has value and he is stuck with him. Paul is a lot of things but being a good teammate rarely appears in the top 5 things he has going for him.

If he can parlay that situation into Jimmy Butler .. good for him...he should be EOY.

Just don't bet more than that stanky old ripped t-shirt in your gym bag on it.
There's no such thing as a 2nd round bust.

It would be an interesting discussion. In hindsight we know that Masai is not afraid to make a big move.. but signing KD for a max knowing that he can't play for a year.. and not knowing what he'll be like after his injury are two big risks that I'm not even sure he'd make.

If we didn't have Kawhi than I would want him to make that type of play.. hard to beat a team with a top 5 stud on it (as we all saw this season). But I'm just a fan from the cheap seats. I'm fine with a redshirt year because I'll always come back. Would a casual fan do that though? Would MLSE/ownership be okay with a lossed year?

Ultimately I don't think KD would want to come here anyway.. so it's probably all moot.

Re your first point ... I think full on snub doesn't quite happen because good execs have back channels who are used to gauge interest both ways before they go thru the dog & pony shows. It would seem that only the real desperate teams (given KD's condition) will be offering the full max he has coming. Knicks and Nets are probably front runners... I wonder about the Mavs as well. The achilles lessens the odds ... look at Cousins as the latest example.
I think Masai would have passed.
