  • Everything Chuck Hayes

I really like Marvelous Hayes and I am shocked he doesn't have the honor of having his own thread.

He has ridiculously awesome free throw shooting mechanics/techniques.

He is an awesome one on one post defender, I remember when he even held freakin Lamarcus Alridge in a near comeback on the fourth quarter.

He had his moments vs Demarcus Cousins as well in the raps blowout victory where he stripped him twice and forced him into a contested fadeaway jumper in consecutive possessions.

What about owning Garnett in Boston?

    He sinked this:

He nailed a running hook shock over Drummond which had everyone, especially Jack Armstrong, cracking up.

He seems like a terrific mentor for JV (has terrific defense awareness, rarely fouls, and is really solid at boxing out taller palyers) and a great team guy liked by everyone (as seen by his bench demeanor and glimpse of the team in the Open Gym series)

Chuck Hayes is the GOAT. Easy.

Only thing that goes against him is his bad contract, but it is now an expiring. I'd still much rather have the chuckster than a free agent scrub as our 4th or 5th big.

I'm sure a life-sized cardboard cutout of Chewbacca can provide the same benefits that Hayes brings to this team.

Hayes' value to the team is teaching younger bigs how to properly protect the rim; Jonas has gotten noticeably better on rim defense since he started practicing with the almighty Chuckwagon. He's not worth $6m, but next year if he wanted to resign for $2-3m that would be decent value.

Relative to expectations I'd have given him a B or even an A.

But in absolute terms, I gave him a C.

I love Chuck, and he brings a lot to the team, just not that much on the court.

He's super solid in very specific situations though.

Also, I was at game 5, and my jaw dropped when he made that runner. He saved Salmons from a lynching with it.
        "Bruno?
Heh, if he is in the D-league still in a few years I will be surprised.
        He's terrible."

        Hope you're wrong.

Lol @ KG trying to back down the Chuck Wagon. He went backwards if anything.

I agree with this, evaluating any 2nd or even 3rd stringer on on court productivity seems like the wrong way to do it. Since Chuck is here, JV fouls less. And he was part of that "magical" locker room.

It's not like second center is a glaring weakness if you compare to other teams. Even on the play offs team, SA has Ayres and Baynes (who?), LAC has big baby (lol), OKC has Adams (who fouls everything in sight), IND has Manhimi, Miami has Haslem, Portland has ..., Washington has Gooden (lol), BKN has blatche.

I think Chuck's the perfect veteran to have on a team. Solid leader.. on the court he has his deficiencies.. but off the court I think he's a class-act. Would love to get him back for a reasonable contract once his expires.

But I also think he's got great trade value.. who wouldn't want a backup center who's also got great character that has a mid-level expiring salary?

I gave him an A because of the runner.

Sorry, I jumped off the Chuckwagon a long time ago. Hayes is clearly the player alter-ego of Dwane Casey: what he gives you on defense, he gives back a lot more on offense. Small doses are OK, though.

First off, I am a huge Raptors fan and now a huge fan of you Mr. Swagquez, so thank you for doing this AMA.
My question is: What are some funny/interesting stories you can share from behind the scenes that fans probably wouldn't have heard about?

First of all, I like that nickname!
One time we are traveling from some city and one time the flight was really bumpy. And Chuck Hayes was throwing up all over the plane. And we were like what the?

That floating jump shot he hit in the playoffs sealed the deal, it was basically the game winner. Think about it: if he had missed that, the game would have gone into overtime, and who knows what would have happened? (Raptors won game 5 by a score of 115-113).

Its as if he knew that game 5 on the 2014 Eastern Conference first round series was the game in which he would unleash his floater game to the general public. Chuck is the real MVP. And, as an individual who witnessed that shot live in person, it changed me for the better.
I know this may be a bit controversial but I think the Raptors have proven that they're the best team in the NBA from Canada

Must have been a bad Raptor game because I remember I almost blow chunks myself after seeing this game:

He's way overpaid, but taking that contract on was simply part of the package needed to unload Rudy and obtain PP and GV. Beyond that, he's the kind of high IQ vet that very valuable to this team at the stage their at, way beyond his court appearances. He's also a handy guy to have in some defensive situations, as the guy is an immoveable object. One more year of him works for this team.
