Powell has a massive opportunity this year. He's the most complete and polished 2/3 they have (Thomas is a specialist, OG is limited until proven otherwise, Johnson is too inconsistent, Davis is unproven/untested, Miller can't get on the floor and McCaw is invisible on offense) and he's going to see lots of minutes, presumably, with Lowry, Siakam and Gasol.
And Norm has always done better beside Lowry and a dominant scorer (Siakam, nowadays) so he can slide into that secondary scorer, tertiary playmaker role. Same sort of spot FVV excels in, off ball shooter, slasher against moving defences, playmaker off those slashes more than off primary action. Plus with Gasol and Lowry rebounding and outlet passing, should be a field day for Norm and Pascal in transition.

    • I only had the opportunity to watch the first half before heading off to work, but Malcom Miller is looking good so far. He’s athletic, long, fluid, knows the system and plays within it. He deserves back up minutes.

Miller, Davis, Thomas are the standouts for me so far.

I thought Miller should have got more burn last year. Really hope they give him a fair opportunity to win a rotation spot instead of just running him out there with scrubs in garbage time. Heck, he's right there with OG for the starting SF spot and ahead of Stanley and RHJ. Smoothest shooting stroke on the team.

        • It's a damn shame. After exciting and promising rookie year OG looks like he won't be anything more than PJ Tucker.

          • I have only watched highlights of both the first 2 games but it seems like Johnson and RHJ are not getting very much playing time. Is this Nurse just giving a shot to the deeper bench guys to prove themselves as Johnson and RHJ are know commodities? or is he just not very high on them? Anyone who watched the games have any insight?

            • Also terrence davis looks great. I think he's the frontrunner for the backup 2 Guard right now

Except, Powell has struggled to seize opportunities before and he can be wildly inconsistent game-to-game. Nurse is likely going to play mad scientist with rotations all year, so Powell may not have the luxury have simply slotting into a spot and playing the same way every game and he'll have to figure out how to contribute in different configurations not just when circumstances are ideal for him.

I think Norm knows this is his last opportunity to become a consistent starter. We have seen Powell performs the best when his back is against the wall and he has to perform Eg. his rookie year and the yearly murdering of the bucks. I think he has a solid year.

OG is NOWHERE near as good a defender or as tough physical of a defender as PJ. He can't shoot the ball as good as PJ either. And his IQ isn't there either.

Time to face the truth, OG is not that dude. There's a reason why he got drafted late in the 1st.

He's 22 and has played 140 games. PJ Tucker played 17 games his first year and was out of the league for the next 5 years. PJ Tucker wasn't PJ Tucker until 7 years into his career.

                      • I agree. It was actually fun to watch OG play defense at full speed. He looked good from that perspective.

Yeah I like Miller a lot. Still remember him tying up Oladipo against Indiana a couple of years back. He's a solid 2-way payer.. just needs the opportunity.

                          • OG may be better as an old school PF, he has the build to play down low and grab boards and he also can float out and shoot some threes.

I dont think he is a creator at this point In his career. Cutting, put backs, and corner threes should be his focus. Horace Grant with a corner three should be his model.

Any player that does that dirty work is valuable to a team.

                            • From what I’ve seen Miller deserves minutes as the back up 3. I think being familiar with the offence and defence helps, but he looks much better than SJ or anyone else vying for that position.

Miller needs to be more agressive. For a 26 year old, getting payed $1.5 million for potentially putting up 4 or 5 points a game might not be enough to justify.
