  • So Turkey, Senegal, France, New Zealand and the Phillipines stand in our way of making the Olympics. I don't know too much about international ball, but France and Turkey kind of scare me

We've proven we can lose to anyone but I remember hearing France will be missing many of their main guys. I think it's earlier in this thread.

Well, I'm not that worried about Turkey and France is not really a threat this year as Batum, Fournier, Mahinmi and Rody Gobert won't play in qualifiers. (Tony Parker will play though.) We should be odds-on favourite to qualify. (We are 61/1 to win the Olympics )

The players you mentioned for France might not play but Joffrey Lauvergne, Boris Diaw, Nando De Colo and Tony Parker will. Turkey got Kanter , Asik and Ersan İlyasova. Canada does have more talent but as we saw vs Argentina and Venezuela, that Canada's inexperience vs veteran teams will be problematic.

It will help if Tristan Thompson decides to show up. Also its interesting that all 3 teams (Canada, France and Turkey) have high value players in the draft that could help each team (Jamal Murray, Furkan Korkmaz and Timothe Luwawu) but probably will not be signed in time by their respective NBA teams in order to show up for the tournament.

I don't like Turkey. Well, at least their performance at EuroBaseket 2015. They ain't winning shit with that defence. It's terrible.

By the way, french papers say Boris is doubtful to play in Manila.

French preliminary squad: Alexis Ajinca, Nicolas Batum, Rodrigue Beaubois, Fabien Causeur, Nando De Colo, Boris Diaw, Antoine Diot, Mickael Gelabale, Thomas Heurtel, Mouhammadou Jaiteh, Charles Kahudi, Joffrey Lauvergne, Adrien Moerman, Yakuba Ouattara, Tony Parker, Florent Pietrus and Kim Tillie.

France is very beatable and I'm cheering for Philippines to beat them. Imagine playing against Gilas & and their 30,000+ strong crowd in finals? Our group is very unpredictable, but I believe we can make it through.

            • I think their experience last summer, when I suspect they figured they were a shoo in, will help them in their approach this summer. Kind of like what I believe happened with the Raptors last spring in the four game sweep at Washington's hands. They came out of that a little tougher mentally and more focused.

              • The rosters of France and Turkey seem like a murderer's row of talent compared to Venezuela's no name squad at FIBA Americas last September. It's FIBA ball, the game is determined on the floor and not by reputation.

Canada's last medal in the Olympics was in '36, when they played outdoors in the rain. Canada is so long overdue in international competition there must be some kind of curse in play like the "Curse of the Bambino" was for the Red Sox.

Looking at that schedule with the July 5-10 tourney, its such a bad offseason time with free agency (July 5), draft signings and game 7 of the finals scheduled for June 19. Canada is also likely not going to yield a full strength lineup.

                  Injured (out)- Kelly Olynk
Free Agents (injury risk)- Dwight Powell, Andrew Nicholson, Robert Sacre, Anthony Bennett
Draft picks (team release)- Jamal Murray
                  Finals (schedule conflict/overlap)- Tristan Thompson

so many question marks...I think Sacre, Nicholson & Bennett are playing to either stay in the league or showcase for Europe so i'll lean towards them playing despite the injury risk however you never know what advice their agents give them.

Its still soo early but its not unrealistic to think we might be going to Manilla with a core of:
                  PG- Cory Joseph, Tyler Ennis
                  SG- Nik Staukas, Brady Hepslip
                  SF- Andrew Wiggins
                  PF- Trey Lyles

competitive yet not exactly a clear "favourite"

                  • Being Canadian I am a fan of Tristan Thompson but for a guy who last summer wanted to be a max player he isn't playing like one in these Finals ... Honestly I am for a player trying to get as much as possible but when you demand max you should be required to play like a max player ...

System and situation also play a role. He is the 5th option of the starters on a team that only uses 4.

                      • As a fan of Canadian ballers in the NBA why should one be concerned by the fact that Thompson makes the big bucks that he does? He has an important role on a very good team. Hope TT has gas in the tank for the Philippines!

                          • If Thompson Nicholson and Murray are able to play this summer. I think we're the favourite along with the depleted France roster

Unless kanter goes off, I don't see turkey making much noice

I think playing for Canada in the summer may help in his development ... More vital role in the offense .. I think not playing all last summer cause of contract dispute didn't help his development.

Tristan got the max because his agent is also the GM of the Cavs. There is no system/role that exists that can make TT worth a max player in this league. He's very limited as a put-backs & PnR lob guy on offense and a non rim-protector on defense. Great at what he does, but a limited specialist nonetheless. There's a reason why he's a 10th option.
