He is not shooting the 3 well at all, but he is shooting 48% from 2 and 77% from the free throw line. Th 77% is great to see as he shot under 60% last season and was poor in college as well. We need to remember that in FIBA there is a lot of true Zone that gets played, Canada does not have a post threat (high or low) to collapse the zone for clean kick outs. The team shot much better from 3 in game 2, that may help create some gravity towards shooter and make it a little easier on Banton going forward as well.

Sportsnet now has the rights for all of Canada's FIBA ball, but because this is a make up for a 2021 tournament it was not included in the deal.

Banton is doing just fine. It’s great he went and played there where he is tasked with a heavy load against good competition. Got a long way to go but you can see he’s much improved from his rookie year.

One NBA player (and not even a starter) can make all the difference. As long as he plays constantly well enough and a few players step up, they will be competitive.

Of course the 2 wins against the FIBA opponents could have easily gone the other way which means more talent was needed to show up but hey those were still good wins and well coached.

Americup is a great place for Banton to shine and progress as a player. Competitive basketball on the G League level. Glad he's playing it will pay dividends during the season.

Yes it actually means something more here. Lots of times you see G leaguers are playing very individual game to try to pad their stats and here every possession counts, slower pace and more physical game where you really have to use your team-mates more.

I think the players at Americup are playing to win, and for many of them this is the pinnacle of their playing career. It's an extra level of intensity you don't get in G League / Summer League.

This is actual basketball rather than a try out (summer league) or developmental program (G league). It’s not really about his numbers but more about how he runs the team and makes other guys better. 2-1 is a good start given they are at a significant talent disadvantage.

Yep, I'd love to see Banton lead Team Canada to victory. Would speak volumes for his potential and I think it's an awesome moment for growth being the best player on a team in a basketball tournament where everyone is trying to win instead of get a contract.

Talent disadvantage? How do you even rank the talent level of their guys we never heard of vs our guys we never heard of? Like Columbia, for example.

Tbh, this tournament feels more like a “friendly”. I don’t believe it counts for any World Cup or Olympic qualifying points. Hard to imagine any countries taking it too seriously, as the rosters would seem to indicate. Team USA has Jeremy Pargo and Norris Cole and Patrick “3-rings” McCaw. Lol. Dream Team 3.0.

Pretty sure Canada won't have what it take to medal in this tournament, but even making it out of the group phase was an accomplishment for this crew. They have been together for about 2 weeks now and only had a scrimmage vs. the USA for preparation.

They are off t the quarter finals, a win there would be huge.

The results don't matter for world cup or Olympics. That said, the guys here are playing with all their hearts because it's the biggest stage most will ever see. Many are long term national team players who weren't good enough for the NBA, so they have the familiarty with eachother and winning this would mean a lot to them.

The results do matter. This will have a bearing on our world standing which will come into play for World Cup seeding next year.
