  • Didn't we already qualify for the world cup with the win over Argentina? Pretty sure that's why they shut down SGA and NAW, the games don't matter now.

Also Argentina is not some shitty has been team, they're still really good. From an article on the game.

"Argentina was 5-1 and dripping with the kind of international pedigree Canada can only aspire to at this stage.

Argentina, ranked seventh in the world, brought nine of the 12 players from the team that advanced to the quarter-finals of the Olympics last summer, and eight from the team that won silver at the World Cup in 2019."

No, haven't clinched yet. The top 3 teams from their group will qualify. Then the 4th best team from both groups gets in as well. Canada is 7-0. Venezuela and the Dominican Republic are 5-2 and Argentina (currently 4th) is also 5-2. There are 5 games left. So they haven't quite clinched yet mathematically. I don't think they get in even if they beat Panama. Likely requires another win after that too.

      *Edit - Venezuela is 6-1, not 5-2

We didn't qualify yet but with 7-0 record, its almost a guarantee that they are going to qualify to the world cup (top 7 teams from the Americas will go)

However it is best to finish with one of the top win total because that would put you in an easier group in the world cup to advance so you won't be placed in a group of death like what happened with the Olympics qualifiers (don't put us with Turkey Greece and the Czech again but someone like I don't know Egypt, Korea and Finland sounds a lot better).

          • At worst, I think Canada goes 2-3 in their last 5.. they play Panama twice, once with NBA players (and once without). Venezuela (twice) and Argentina are likely losses.. those games are in November, so no NBA players will be available. And they wouldn't be easy wins even if they had NBA players.

Dripping with pedigree, lol. Most of that Argentinian pedigree was FIBA Scola + Manu and the rest of their golden generation. Pedigree means nothing when most of those guys are too old, or not even on the team anymore. Delfino is almost 40... lol.

The fact that Argentina is still ranked #7 in the world shows you the great opportunity that Canada has in front of us. Traditional world powers are declining in talent, while Canada is rising fast. Other than Team USA, does any international team have more NBA talent than Canada? Is any other country even close? The timing of our own golden generation couldn't be better.

Losing both games to Venezuela would be unacceptable as they could come in 2nd. If they field the same team as they had in Feb this season feat' Best, Scrubbs, Wiltjer, Robertson, Ejim and Hayes they should not lose both games.

Canada has been talented for some time.. it's always about who's willing to show up. The fact that Shai and RJ want to play is pretty impressive.

But the only other team I could see as a potential powerhouse for years to come is France.... especially now that Embiid has their passport. They won't just have the twin towers with Gobert but triplet towers with Wembanyama coming in next season.

Its not that easy to advance, its politics plus commitments and not everyone shows up at the same time. Plus lets not forget certain countries do field superstars like Luka, Giannis and Jokic' or even a strong tandem like JV & Sabonis is a problem. Team Canada can score but they are not exactly what you call a defensive force out there.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention Gobert and Embiid on the same team France... death.

Venezuela is tough. I'm hoping they at least split their games. But Venezuela doesn't have an easy schedule either. They play the DR twice and Canada twice in their last 5 (Bahamas is their other game which should be a cake walk).

Can't have too many Scrubbs either. TLC may have to do a remake.

france perennially has a lot of NBA talent, and also tend to similarly underachieve in international competitions.

gobert, batum, fournier, frankie smokes, maledon, TLC, killian hayes, victor wembanyama, etc.
