The usa is not included because being defending Olympic or world cup Champs means they get a bye into the Olympic games
So why were all the American guys practicing and had that scrimmage?
I relish negativity and disappointment. It is not healthy. Somebody buy me a pony.

    • Just to get the guys in the pool of players together as far as I know they did not have any international competition

      • After the Rio Olympics FIBA is changing the Olympic and World Cup system of qualification. No more automatic berths for previous World Cup and Olympic gold medalists so the the USA will have to participate in the qualification process. Tournaments such as FIBA Americas and Eurobasket will no longer be qualification tournaments. Instead, there will be a series of home and home games like World Cup soccer qualifiers.

The real kicker for Canada and the USA is that these games will take place during the NBA season. As it stands now no NBA or NCAA players will be able to participate in the qualifying rounds. No Wiggins, no Joseph, no Thompson, etc. for Canada. Nations with their own national pro leagues like Argentina, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela are likely going to have their players available.

Where will Canada and U.S get there players ? The quality of play in these tourney's will be horrible .. Teams like TFC loan players during to play for there country that is why it works in soccer ..

D League possibly. A group of CBA all stars won a bronze at the world championship in 1998 during the first NBA lockout. Heslip, Bhullar, Birch, Kabongo, Bachyinski and Lufile spent at least part of last season in the D League. In the interests of Canadian basketball, the Raptors could have a core pool of Canadian players ready for FIBA group play.

            • ...and people were questioning why Hanlan was invited to camp... Since most Euro teams are tied to soccer teams that loan players for international play you have to assume that they will do the same for these games. So D League, Euro and maybe CIS would be the places to recruit players.

7 teams from America would qualify, so even with our B team we should still be able to qualify. The other countries will probably also be missing a few key players during qualification.

I highly doubt this goes through as predicted, with no NBA or NCAA talent able to participate in FIBA events. Their goal is still to make money, and literally no one will watch if NBA and NCAA players aren't involved.

The home and home games does sound like a great idea though. It's depressing to watch these games in Mexico City with only a few hundred people there watching.

Under the new FIBA system of qualification NBA players will be welcome to the marquee events (Olympics, World Cup) which will take place out of season but qualification rounds will be in November, March, and June.

This game restored my faith in the team making the Olympics. Venezuela is a really good team by this tournaments standards and we were up by 20 the entire game, made it look easy. We can basically out-talent every other team. I think we end up winning the whole thing.
People are way too melodramatic after losses. Canada is a very good but inexperienced team that got caught wrong-footed by a very good Argentinian team that played about as well as it could but the Canadians clearly have found their balance the last two games.

It's also worth keeping in mind that Triano has clearly been trying to manage the workload of his better players early on in the tournament rolling 11 or 12 guys.

The good news for Canada is that if they win today, they will be sitting in a really good spot. The Group A teams all look really shaky outside of Mexico, which should set up the Canadians well to make the final four.

If that actually happens then Canada will never again qualify for any Olympics or World Championships. The Americans will probably be okay but even they might be hard pressed to put together teams.

                          • Maybe Ayon will wear down. He's averaging over 35 minutes a game for Mexico. Cory Joseph's minutes are creeping up, almost 30 minutes against Venezuela.

I think we wipe the floor with Mexico, their side of the bracket is dog shit. Argentina is the only team that should be able to hang with us, and I think we beat them in the Gold medal game rematch.

How dumb does that sound though? It doesn't make any sense to force countries to qualify with players that won't be on their teams in the Olympics or World Cup. It'd be like deciding NBA playoff teams by the records of their D-League affiliates. Money talks and this would effectively kill FIBA, I just don't see it happening as proposed.
