  • What's your ideal second unit for next season?

Raptors have Lou Williams coming over a potential candidate for 6th man of the year. So, it's safe to say he has a spot.

Masai has extended the QO to Vasquez, Patterson and De Colo. We have heard rumblings of interest in VC, Ariza, Sefolosha. Not sure if Nogueira will get that back up C position just yet. Hopefully Fields developed some kind of jump shot or he and Novak will probably only get spot minutes again.

So with free agents, RFAs, or even potential trades what does your dream (but achievable 2nd unit look like)

GV, Williams, Wesley Johnson, PPAtterson, Hansborough, don't understand why air Canada part 2, or Rashard Lewis.

      GV
      Williams
      Sefalosha
      Patterson
      Bebe + Hayes

Good mix of ball handling, scoring, defense. Stretch 4 + Blocking Center, 2 Ball handlers that can score in bunches, and a Wing defender specialist
      The Baltic Beast is unstoppable!

A lot of you have Bebe as your backup center. You do know Casey is our coach right?

If Caboclo really isn't able to play this year (D-League) I like these line ups

STARTERS: Lowry, Derozan, Fields, Patterson, JV

2nd UNIT: Vasquez, Williams, Ross, Amir, Nogueira

BUT I don't want rigid line ups. I think greater flexibility in roster line-ups is important if you really want to go deep in the playoffs. I think it's inevitable that every team is going to be matched up against a team that is going to exploit your traditional line ups at some point in the post season. So even though the idea is you'd rather force the other team to match up to you, sometimes that's not going to get you the wins. If you haven't used those lineups at least a little bit in the regular season, it's a much higher risk scenario and it's hard to expect performance. Trying out different line ups is going to give the coaching staff greater confidence in the post season to make roster adjustments and keep opponents guessing.

The Spurs didn't play anyone more than 29.1 minutes/game. I think a lot people see that as wanting to rest Parker/Manu/Duncan, and while that was certainly case in the 2012-2013 season, They've certainly expanded the practice this past season. Take a look at both their young starters:

Danny Green 27.5 down to 24.3
Kawhi Leonard 31.2 down to 29.1

It's impossible to know for sure whether it was wanting to keep odometer readings low across the board, forces you to play more guys, or wanting to test multiple line ups which is going to cut into your starters playing time, as BOTH of those notions were attributed to the Spurs as reasons for their success.

I don't care so much about the odometer side of the argument-even for younger players (although according to some talking heads it's gaining traction), but I do think the team, especially if it establishes that it is a playoff team early, should not be afraid to experiment with line ups. Hell, even try the ridiculous Fields-Caboclo-Patterson-Hansborough-Noguiera for 20 minutes over the course of the full season. Yes, you need to do it in a way that doesn't leave players completely wondering what they'll see from one game to the next, but the more rigid your line ups, the easier it is for a team to plan against you in a 7 game series.

So I answered the questions, because I figured it'd be a jerk maneuver otherwise, but having the ideal bench doesn't matter if you haven't figured out how to use them to your best advantage in the playoffs. This matter much less, if you aren't concerned about playoff performance, and are just trying to make it their in the first place.

Terrence will be starting not Fields. But in terms of everything else you make good points.

                  PG - Vazquez
SG - Louis Williams (6th man candidate)
SF - Thabo or Vince (I'm guessing it's going to be Thabo)
                  PF - 2Pat
                  C - Noguiera

                  Third Unit
PG - Nando De Colo or some D-League PG (Possibly Machado or Kabongo if they make the cut - this year's Dwight Bycks)
                  SG - Fields (ughhh)
                  SF - Novak
PF - FA or D-League signing (could be James McAdoo)
                  C - Hayes

Oh and Patterson won't be starting over Amir. He might get more minutes than Amir throughout the game because of Amir's ankles but he won't start.

The third power forward would be hansbrough. Even though I highly doubt Noguiera is the backup center. Also I don't see us having the money after resigning all of our guys to get a backup small forward. So I think the backup will be Fields. Caboclo is going to be on the team as well. Probably Deandre Daniels too.

We have 25.3M to sign Lowry, Vasquez, Patterson and whoever else we want. Since we already have 11 guys signed for next year that are gonna be on the team (I'm not counting Daniels because ujiri said he'll either be in the d league or in Europe).

If Lowry signs for 12 like expected, we have 13.3 mil to spend to avoid luxury tax. Patterson for 6M and Gravy for 4M is certainly realistic, which means we have just over 3M to sign a backup SF. Definitely enough money.

Jonas/Bebe/Hayes rotation depends on Bebe's ability
                          Amir/2Pat/Hans
                          Ross/Fields/Bruno/Novak
                          DeMar/Lou Williams/Fields
                          Lowry/Vasquez/Lou Williams

One roster spot is left. IMO, the last spot depends totally on Fields. Has his shot improved at all? If he is the same as last year, you need to sign a SF. Marvin Williams is my choice based on his balanced game, and his versatility. We probably can get him with the MLE

Casey loves Defense. Bebe's standing reach combined with his max vertical means he can reach just under 12 feet.
