Do they understand that mostly Trump voters will be passing away, or are they hoping it will be poor black and brown people? The morbidity rate of older patients is a much higher percentage.

But that's how it's always worked ... scientists use "Mortality Rate" to determine the severity of a virus ... not the "Survival Rate". That 100,000 doesn't really paint a relevant picture for people trying to understand the severity of the situation. And realistically, they shouldn't be trying to paint a positive picture right now ... people need to take this seriously, and frankly, ALOT of people are not.
The true mortality rate is a % of all cases, not just the % of the ones that are tested (which is skewed towards people that either have symptoms or are at a high risk of exposure). Also, the goal of the "100,000" is not to establish a "survival rate" is to put context on what's really happening: there are lots of new cases every day, but there are also many cases that are done and over with, developed a natural immunity for it and won't infect anyone else (unlike things like HIV where the patient is contagious forever). There's a natural cycle to this, but that's hazy to a lot people because what's mostly talked about is the brand new cases (without the counterbalance of the old ones which are done and over with). But hey, if the goal is to NOT be positive and continue to focus on the bleakness of it so people stay home, then yeah they're doing a good job there.

          • It's not about mortality rate. We cant have too many people hospitalized. It's not just people with corona who need ventilators. We cant put more strain on health system

Yup, my uncle on Vancouver Island had a hernia yesterday and because (thankfully) it’s not a critical issue he’s been asked to hold off on full treatment for now. Healthcare overload would be a supremely awful situation

              • In other COVID-19 news, Doug Ford 's list of essential workplaces is out... and it includes everything - including dry cleaners

So.. not REALLY shutting down the province at all.

The itemized list is here if anyone is curious:
                  https://news.ontario.ca/opo/en/2020/3/list-of-essential-workplaces.html

Even though the list is long.. it sort of makes sense. Those are the services that require the world from running. As for laundry services, not every home has a washer/dryer. In fact I know several people that don't (they live in condos and rely on the condo's laundromat). Most laundromats also have built in dry cleaning services. Plus hotels/motels that will be open and will need them too.

What I would hate to see is that someone uses this list and creates a loop hole from it. Like item 28 in the list:

                  28. Construction work and services, including demolition services, in the industrial, commercial, institutional and residential sectors;

I mean for example hiring someone to dig a pool in your back yard. It could in theory qualify, but is so unnecessary at this point.

Bingo. It’s frightening that there are elected politicians that don’t understand this.
Also the mortality rate would likely go way up if some infected people don’t have access to health care if the system is so overwhelmed.

That's what I'm saying rocwell. We have to see some improvement in 4-8 weeks then 8-12 weeks. If we're still in this situation come August/September then we're in serious trouble.
It won't be that long. China is revving their engines back up, after 2 months. If we can't do better than fucking China, where we have a much lower infection rate right now than when they took action, and only 35 million people spread out over everywhere fucking where, then that's pretty pathetic.

I believe sometime around June 1 they will start slowly and tentatively reopening most business

Yep, in the next couple of days the US will pass Italy for the most active cases in the world. And this guy is still saying "no biggy". Unbelievable.

The infection rate (per 1 million) is still much lower than Italy's. Not that I expect the orange clown to do anything good, and the US is still royally fucked. They have no idea wtf they're doing down there, and the worst hasn't even hit them yet.

And In fact, Trump might look at this as beneficial to his cause: call a national emergency and suspend elections.
