There is talk among scientists and some in the health community that being exposed to the virus may not provide immunity. Friedman's piece in today's NY Times writes about the Swedish perspective on this question. They suggest if not, what's the point of a vaccine?

Contracting the virus almost definitely provides some level of immunity. The questions are how long that immunity lasts for, what kind of viral load it can handle, etc.

It's weird looking at Quebec moving to reopen with the worst situation in Canada...but then you look at the States which has more deaths than Quebec's total pretty much every day.

BC was the province that took the first COVID-19 whack. and after quick rise in cases it's 7 day average has been hovering between 20 to 40 cases a day for over a month. No clear downward or upward trend. In terms of mitigation efforts what is BC allowing that's different from say Alberta or Sask?

BC has acted as a province and communicates as a province from the beginning. Like a couple of weeks ago when an individual in prison in Kelowna tested positive, Dr. Henry was asked what they were doing to prevent the spread. She basically said that they were just implementing the plans they had already prepared in JANUARY should such an individual be affected. She said that the inmate was already isolated and the others quarantined.

BC took this virus seriously from the beginning. On March 12(I remember this very well), Dr. Henry recommended against non essential travel outside of Canada. On that SAME day, Doug Ford told families to "go away" and "have fun" during the week-long holiday.

Dr. Henry a couple of weeks ago also talked about how BC learned from Quebec and its experience with a surge of cases when people returned from spring break (BC has later spring break than Quebec).

In contrast, I don't know who Ontario's top health official is. All we see is the Minister of Health, Christine Elliot, who looks utterly bewildered..... because she is.

Dr. Henry is certainly an experienced, respected voice, the kind you would want to be leading BC's effort to deal with this virus. My question was more related to Premier Horgan's comments regarding having a unique re-opening plan because BC isn't starting from the same lockdown approach adopted by other provinces. I'm curious to learn about the differences in BC's restrictions vs say it's neighbours Alberta or even Sask. Are they material enough to make a substantial difference?

There is no difference. None of them were real "lockdowns". They closed all small businesses, schools and events, and asked you to work from home if you're able to. And they put plexiglass at the registers for the big businesses, and arrows on the floors. Exact same in each province.

Ya i dont think it really makes sense for anyone to open schools this spring. Just finish out the school year online for the youngins and let them come back in the Fall.

Universities are already done, and trying to bring back elementary and high schools now doesn’t make much sense if the plan is to ease back into things over the next few months.

Having all schools open in September is a clear goal and whether or not it happens will serve as a benchmark as to where the province is at that point

In a little more than 3 weeks, for Quebec it's full steam ahead with everything back on line by May 25th, how can numbers not go up...a lot? Amazing contrast between Quebec and the rest of Canada.

So what sectors is Horgan talking about when he says...

BC's re-opening plan will be different from other provinces because BC didn't implement the full extent of lockdown other provices used. The approach in British Columbia was to focus on how could we keep sectors operating safely, rather than shutting them down until such time as we could open them up again.
