Yep... my grandfather is in a nursing home and his primary care nurse will facetime/whatsapp video call my mom a few times a week so that they can talk to each other.
My mother in law is in more of a retirement community but they have been militant about everything since day one. No one has been allowed to visit since February and all packages get disinfected, etc. They had visits in the courtyard for mother's day and they cleaned everything prior to and after they met. We are fortunate cause it's basically a giant condo complex for old people and it isn't massive but they've done a good job. She's fortunate cause she is still very able to do things but, on the flip side, it's also driving her crazy being stuck in the complex.

I still wonder though what is going to happen going forward. I mean, it's fine for now to lock these places down but at some point you have to open them up again - you can't keep people in a cage in the name of protecting them. That's standard sci-fi plot stuff.

Families are also going to have enough of watching their parents/grandparents pass away through a window (if that - that's not even possible in a lot of cases, people are dying alone). I wonder if more families won't elect to bring elderly home for end of life, not sure what policies will need to be adjusted there but expanded homecare supports could be required.

Might work in some cases but with both parents usually working, families are ill equipped to deal with incontinence, meds schedule, even mild dementia etc that has placed the older family member in the facility in the first place. If it's just an adult retirement residence, they'll miss the company of people their own age, the entertainment provided, exercise classes, movie nights, daily happy hour, pet therapy, organized outings etc. Being home often means just staring at the TV a lot of the day

You basically need one person (almost certainly the wife) at home full-time and the kids have to be older otherwise it doesn't work. You also run into issues like what happens if all 4 grandparents are alive and ill? How would that possibly work?

From what I understand, the single biggest issue is that the staff at these places are so badly paid that they take multiple jobs to make ends meet and the result is that they become spreaders of illness from one place to the next. It seems to me that paying staff better and checking them daily (temps, etc.) might solve a pretty big chunk of the problem.

Most PSW's earn between 17-$20/hr, some lower, some higher. It's a bit of a gross/messy and sometimes stressful job but ~$40K/yr for relatively unskilled labour is not that bad. Many of these people are saints imo. But like many employers, many refuse to give full time work to PSW's in order to avoid f/t benefits. That forces PSW's to work multiple places to gain f/t hours.

            • I didn't think we'd be this stupid.
Opening the border to the US on May 21 is a bad bad idea, goods and services are already crossing, nothing else is essential. Why not slowly open up our own workplaces and get people back to being able to support their families first and see where that goes?

And Doug Ford now saying his daughters visited on Mother's Day and tries to say it was just his "immediate family, no husbands or boyfriends" like COVID knows the difference....I think Ford has been doing a pretty good job during this but overall....our politicians are idiots.

It's not that I think there was much risk with small gatherings, it's the talking out of both sides of your face, don't do this but I'm OK to do it. Trudeau to the cottage, Doug having other families over, meanwhile there's already COVID in his family etc.

sounds like the perfect government, and one that all free countries should attempt to emulate. "china is the largest democracy in the world"(actual intro to one plenum, to 100% agreement and approval), or my favourite and quickly coming to canada, "chinese people are free to say and think any thoughts, but they have to be the right words, and thoughts".

kudos to musk, and great reality check to the peoples republic of california. bye bye money and jobs. quick economics lesson for the socialist economics majors(ahahahahaha). when you rely on other people's money, and finally they have had enough of your stealing, they are the rich ones with enough money to leave. don't worry though, you can bleed rocks for money, and then everything will be free.

Yep this is pretty much what happened for the first while with my grandfather. He has dementia and his daughter in law took care of him during the day and his son after work in the evening.

Eventually it became quite stressful and they applied for a nursing home and got him into one. Thankfully, it is a good home and it's literally down the street from where they live, so he can be (well he was at least) visited daily.

Ford and Trudeau should both resign. Neither would be missed in the least and it would send a message that the rules are not just for the little people. Sadly, the rules are just for the little people....

                      • I don't understand provinces slashing public sector jobs. In some cases the work has dried up but in others they're just hacking jobs out of the economy. Overall, this makes the economy worse and costs us all. We need to keep people working, not put more people on CERB/EI. As tax payers we pay for it one way or another, as members of the economy it's better for all of us if these people are working. (I am not a civil servant.)

Whether you pay government workers with the emergency CERB funding program or continue to pay the civil service their regular salary it’s just a different vehicle for distributing taxpayer money in the public sector.

No axe axe to grind here on paying the federal and provincial civil service money.

There will be some kind of recalibration by Ottawa and the provinces on how large the civil service is once the cold light of day shines on a massively reduced tax haul this year and next.

There may actually be a riot if Ottawa hikes private sector taxation at the personal and business levels to pay for the incredibly generous pensions of the civil service.
There's no such thing as a 2nd round bust.

i think the main places of spread he talks about are going to be extremely affected with a lack of demand. the before crowded places aren't going to be the now crowded places.

i think the companies will adapt. for the stadiums for example, either tickets will be so cheap to convince some to go anyway, or they will eliminate seats and raise prices. whatever works best for getting them money.

i really can't see people filling up a cruise ship any time soon.

in a risk reward scenario, not opening will kill a lot more people in a lot slower, and more painful way. and in a horridly practical way, those deaths will be of people with more value to peoplekind.
