  • Something the protests seem to be reinforcing is a bunch of active, relatively healthy, relatively young, people moving about outdoors are at very low risk of transmission - even in large crowds.

Early info that came out was that transmission risk is very low outdoors and very low with short contact. I remember the initial warnings were about 20+ minute indoor contact at close proximity. I think two things have happened:

    - Public health decided to simplify messaging and the whole thing became about distancing, group size, and in some places, masks. That's it now. All other context or info is out the window.
    - Media using fear mongering to drive clicks threw all context out the window a long time ago. Now every person you get near is your potential killer. Or you're theirs. Honestly this is really bad for our social well being as individuals and as a group. It's going to have some long term negative consequences beyond the virus.

    • So if the US surges are not due to demonstrations, it's likely beaches and the news lightened restrictions at patios and bars

So nfl should be able to have packed stadiums. Most are outdoor roofless stadiums so if they say protests didnt spread it they should have the same opinion on nfl stadiums

Well, separate protests in Toronto reportedly had "thousands" with some definitely not wearing masks and virtually none social distancing so I guess we'll see. But you're right, it wasn't 10 or 20 thousand.
Compare the protests in the US to Canada. It is no comparison. Ontario is one of the hardest hit provinces for COVID19.

          • I find that hard to believe. This is the sort of thing that is very difficult to track considering their inconsistent testing, suspicions of numbers being fudged and other factors.

They don't really know enough to be saying this. How could they? If I went to a protest, caught it, didn't wear a mask, went out shopping and to the beach with mild symptoms how do they know who I gave it to and who those people who caught it gave it to? I could be spreading it in five days and so could those people. Right?

                • Not referring to tennis specifically, but I have never read that the NBA requires players to "refrain from physical activity for a minimum of 14 days" If you're self isolating, can you still go for a run in an isolated area for instance?
Kings' Jabari Parker seen playing tennis after positive test: Report

Three days after announcing he had tested positive for COVID-19, Sacramento Kings forward Jabari Parker was spotted playing tennis in Chicago without a mask, after reportedly going out to a restaurant recently.

TMZ published pair of photos showing Parker playing tennis without a mask, and said the photos were taken earlier that day.

The outlet also reported, “Jabari was recently seen out at a restaurant there in the Windy City.”

While it is unknown exactly when Parker tested positive or the current status of his recovery, the club released a statement to the Sacramento Bee on Saturday afternoon after the TMZ report surfaced.

“We are aware of the report and are gathering additional information,” the statement read. “We have no further comment at this time.”

The NBA requires any player who tests positive for COVID-19 to refrain from physical activity for a minimum of 14 days.

Parker, 25, said in a statement Wednesday he tested positive for COVID-19 “several days ago” and that he was isolating in Chicago. He added he planned to join his teammates next month at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla., when the NBA season resumes.

Teammate Alex Len also announced Wednesday that he, too, tested positive for the virus. Fellow Kings player Buddy Hield also reportedly tested positive for COVID-19, though neither the Kings nor Hield have made any announcement.

Teams will begin arriving in Florida for training camp by July 11, and the season will resume July 30.

The NBA season went on a hiatus on March 11.

                        • nine more players tested positive, which brings the total to 7 percent of all players tested now sine june 23.

also, there's no combating this level of stupid:

Some young people in Alabama are throwing COVID-19 parties, a disturbing competition where people who have coronavirus attend and the first person to get infected receives a payout, local officials said.

The parties are being held in Tuscaloosa, and infected people are urged to attend so others can intentionally contract the virus...

                          • These positive tests of players, it is important to remember, are part of the plan. None of this is surprising, nor does any of it portend doom for the bubble concept. All part of the process. Until players are in the bubble for a few weeks, expect more positives to crop up. It's at that point that the bubble concept will be tested - if positives keep cropping up at a significant pace after the players have been isolated from the outside world for a few weeks, that's a real problem. One with no obvious solution besides shutting down entire teams or even the league for a week or two until tests show a clean slate again.

Same goes for the Florida disaster in the making - the entire concept of the bubble is to reduce interaction with the outside world to the point that transmission rates should be extremely low. This would be necessary even in a location that had decent COVID numbers, and the concept still applies no matter how bad the surrounding environment is. Now, there are all sorts of questions about the efficacy of the bubble system they are implementing, but they've taken some extreme steps. I'd say the only thing missing would be trying to get the support staff for the facility to bubble as well. But so long as the rules about distancing, PPE, etc are followed by those support staff, the risk should still be heavily mitigated. We'll see whether it is good enough. But it's far from doomed based on any of the news that has been coming out of late.

Some countries are setting up so-called "immunity passports" and others may follow suit.

The idea is that a passport would certify that you have had coronavirus and will not carry or contract the disease again, opening up a way out of lockdown restrictions for the holder.
