Could be a very short off season if the NBA has its way:

The draft is currently scheduled for Nov 18.

Free agency is usually after.. although apparently some players and teams are already making deals:

Short for some. But not for the 8 teams that havent played since march, or the 8 that havent played since August or the 1st round exits that havent played since september. The raptors offseason being eliminated in the 2nd round probably is pretty close to last years playing into June and starting in October.

Boo hoo for the 2 teams that made the finals but the league has to do this to get back into regular scheduling, they cant be playing in the middle of summer the ratings showed that and going to be hard to convince advertiser to shell out the same $ when no one is watching in the summer.
To be the champs you got to beat the champs

Not totally up to date on this but my understanding at the moment is Canadians may be able to get into the US, the bigger hassle will be trying to get back into Canada. We're the ones who want the border closed right now.
So it’s the minnow trap. You can get in to the States but you can’t get out.
Which in a round about way says the border is closed to mere mortals with families.

Yet more do as I say because it’s good for you from our betters in Ottawa and Queens Park.

It's a numbers game Demo. You can't let everyone do it, it has to be on an exceptional basis right now, or we'd be seeing similar numbers here (proportionally). You can argue that no one should be allowed to at all then, but in terms of practical effect and actually controlling the impact of the virus, keeping traffic low is enough to prevent a large scale increase in cases.

Its not a numbers game Dan.
Its an ad hoc application of an increasing set of haphazard policy pronouncements from our bureaucrats.

As we shut down the border in the spring ... the Roxham Road entry point for "non standard" border entry remained open.
Thousands of truckers cross and continue to cross the border daily... going to bet that very very few of them are tested on entry or departure.
Hundreds of flights land in Pearson, Trudeau, Vancouver IA on a weekly basis.
We close small business in the hospitality and food&bevridge industry literally on one side of a street and not on the other.

And to save us all from what? To stumble down the path of:
                Personal financial ruin ?
The resulting cases of depression and suicide as a offshoot of financial ruin ?
                Spousal abuse?
                Substance abuse ?

There are three legs to this problem. Public Health. Personal Freedom. The economy which is YOUR job.
                All three matter.

Its a "numbers game" till your directly affected. Then its more than that.
The current one trick pony cure is going to prove much worse than the disease.

The only argument you are really making is "optics", which is weak. If other industries can setup safe travel bubbles that are at a low risk to add Covid cases, then 100%, allow those industries to cross borders too. Every industry should be thinking about ways to get back to some form of normal. If sports is the trigger for this, then we will be thanking the NBA for working out some of the those travel protocols and logistics.
100% agree. But we're not facing re-election for anything.

                  • Vaccine is expected to make it's big debut around January. Lots of things are changing folks. Players have kids in school, they're not gonna wanna play in kansas city for a year. Of course its not their call, but you better believe masai will be fighting to stay and play in toronto, and hes got friends in high places.

All the more reason why optics aren’t important right now. Voters have the attention span of gnats these days.

A substantial faction of NBA players and stars are advocating for next season to begin on Jan. 18, Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the U.S., with free agency to open on Dec. 1, according to Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes.
A substantial faction of NBA players and stars are advocating for next season to begin on Jan. 18, Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the U.S., with free agency to open on Dec. 1, according to Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes.

Last week, ESPN reported that the NBA was discussing a pre-Christmas Day start to the 2020-21 campaign, with a 72-game season that finishes before the Summer Olympics.

The proposal for a late December start was, however, reportedly not well-received by all teams. Per ESPN, a number of clubs indicated that the timeline may not be feasible, while others had been pushing to start the season around MLK Day, or holding out as long as possible to see when — or if — fans could be permitted to attend games.

Any agreement by the Board of Governors on a plan for next season would have to be approved by the Players Association.

The two sides previously agreed to an Oct. 30 deadline to complete ongoing discussions on modifications to the collective bargaining agreements, which have reportedly included modifications to the salary cap, luxury tax thresholds and how much escrow is taken from players’ salaries.

The next confirmed date on the NBA calendar is the draft, which is slated for Nov. 18. Free agency is expected to start shortly after.

                          - Morey is going to Philly to run things there
                          - Sam Cassell joining Rivers as an assistant in Philly.
                          - Stephen Silas (former assistant to Carlisle in Dallas) is the new head coach in Houston
                          - Jazz have been sold for $1.66B
                          - NBA lost 10% in revenue overall in the 19-20 season. Could lose up to 40% (or $4B) if there are no fans at all next season.

Will Darryl Morey, via proxy, move one of Simmons or Embiid now that he has a brand new toy to work with ?

The draft is in 3 weeks.

Over / Under is 4 weeks.

                            I'll take the under. .

I don't see any scenario under which Morey doesn't trade Simmons for someone who can actually shoot.
