Hard to think of a player flipping a switch 7 years in like Julius Randle just did. Though getting peak DeMar level offensive usage definitely helps. Still, he made the most of it:

A bit late, but Randle had no business winning this award. Other than raw PPG (barely), he actually had better seasons than this year in most statistical categories (especially advanced). MIP has never been a last year vs. this year award, like the graphic is showing. The only reason Randle won MIP was because it was the Knicks and they were winning.... so this is really a team award. It was a cool story and everybody wanted the Knicks to be relevant again.

I don't really understand what Russillo's laughing about. Hakeem was better than Shaq. Shaq said it himself on Inside the NBA last night. He said that Hakeem was way better than him. And we know Shaq is not most humble guy when it comes to "who's better" argument.

He might have been "better", as in more well rounded and skilled. But, and Shaq had a better peak and a better career. Gimme 2000 Shaq over any center in history.

Yeah hard to describe the extent of Shaq as a pure dominant force. Every team in the league had to have 1 or 2 crappy bigs on the roster who were just available for Shaq fouls. Literally. How many iffy 7 foot basketball players got contracts because everyone wanted to be ready for Shaq?

When a player isn't just skilled as an individual, but bends the league like that - there are very few guys who do that.

Yeah, I mean credit to Randle feels kind of like credit to DD back in the day - not just anybody can rack up increased production given increased usage (a pretty common misconception extrapolating bench performance or per 36 numbers), it is credit to a player who can produce under a heavy workload. But seems like that was about the extent of it for Randle, that was a pretty spectacular flame out.

Also it was a Thibs team, and Thibs has developed a bit of a Bud-like trend of nice regular seasons and short playoff runs. One argument in his favour is he's rarely coached teams with a top 10 guy, and how deep do you really want to go in the NBA playoffs without a top player. This is what happens to the B-level guys - they don't have another gear, they can't counter adjustments, they're just not at that level.

Not sure I agree. Peak Hakeem was what, early/mid 90's? In 94 he averaged 27ppg, 12rpg, 4apg and 4bpg lol. He was the MVP and DPOY(Shaq never won this award). He led the Rockets that year to a championship. That 94 team also didn't have an elite winger or PG. How many championships did Shaq win without Kobe or Wade?

I'm taking prime Hakeem over prime Shaq or any C in history anyday.

            • I mentioned this in the draft thread. Shaq was an athlete. Like a crazy great one. But he was missing some key elements of his game like shooting. In today's NBA you can build a wall around him and he's screwed. Hakeem had skills but wasn't a force like Shaq. Still an athlete but in a different way. It's like how Embiid has found a way to be an MVP caliber player in today's NBA.

In the NBA a skilled guy can beat an athlete. It's why Jokic and Luka are so good and a guy like Russ, despite his triple doubles, is a guy nobody really wants on their team.

Shaq needed a Wade and Kobe. Hakeem did it with a meh version of Drexler, and Vernon Maxwell.

Although in fairness Hakeem never had the best team in the regular season either. He was always middle of the pack in the West, and kept losing to teams like Utah, Seattle, Phoenix and San Antonio.. and just looking at basketball reference seems like his teams lost in the first round like 7 times. Imagine if that happened to someone in today's NBA? He'd get roasted for that.

              • Hakeem was great and I don't want to take too much away but those two chips were definitely in a lull in the league, MJ was out, Shaq and Penny weren't ready yet, the Bad Boys were done...Houston didn't exactly push past a long line of contenders to get those rings.

kobe needed shaq WAAAAY more than shaq needed kobe. kobe was a flat out liability in the first finals. peak shaq dominated to the tune 38 and 17. i think the lakers would still win two of those chips if kobe was replaced with an average to above average SG, like the equivalent of hakeem's SG's, and maybe all three. although the west was tough and they prob wouldn't have got past the kings or blazers at least once. kobe, meanwhile, would not have won any of those chips if shaq was replaced with rik smits or whoever.

                      • DPOY always goes to a player on the best defensive teams. Raptors were middle of the pack. I think 16th this season.

Our team defence was meh this year. The DPOY's team should make the playoffs or at least the play-in

It's not going to happen because the Nets will come out of the East and the Clips will come out of the West. But I really would love to see a Jazz/Sixers finals. The best C in the game vs the second best C in the game/best defensive player in the game. That'd be a fun matchup because Gobert is a monster defensively. Can Gobert contain Embiid 1 on 1? fun matchup. But anyway, Gobert is the DPOY hands down. No idea why the voting was that close.
