I wanted to disagree with this more, and I do in that DeMar has a much better head on his shoulders than Magette, but in terms of statistical productivity they're pretty similar.

I pulled up a six-way comparison of DeMar, Maggette, Jason Richardson, Ricky Davis, and just for the heck of it T-Mac and Vince, all in their 5th seasons (ages 22-26): http://www.basketball-reference.com/...tevi01&y6=2003

Re: the advanced stats table - DeMar's 2nd or 3rd in free throw rate, ORTG, DRTG, and WS. Every other advanced stat has him 4th to 6th in that group.

Still, all that said the head on his shoulders makes a big difference. I'd much rather have DeMar as a core piece than Maggette, Davis, or even Richardson - it's not even close, really, in spite of the statistical similarities.

Maggette in his best year shot 159/370 from midrange (43%). DeRozan last year took twice as many midrange jumpers and shot 39.6%. And has steadily gotten worse in terms of conversion percentage from midrange throughout his career thus far, so I don't know about better midrange.
A little misleading to take Maggette's best year against Derozan's worst, no? Derozan's conversion percentage has weakened as he has taken on more and more of the scoring load and more attention. I doubt it bottoms out here.

In any case, career percentages from 3-10, 10-16, and 16-23 ft for Maggette are .324/.357/.391 vs .432/.413/.387 for Derozan. The higher volume of shots by Derozan from mid-range are because that is where he's most comfortable, and he has a much wider array of moves there than Maggette ever did. Maggette was a prototypical slasher. With his strength he bullied out a lot of FT attempts. A third of his field goals over his career were from 0-3 feet; as Demar has gotten more comfortable in the mid-range (too comfortable, probably) he's taken fewer and fewer shots inside, with only 15% from 0-3 feet last year. So I do think Demar has the better mid-range game, but I hope he tries to get a more efficient shot profile if he can't improve those long jumper percentages.

I think a couple years ago it would have been fine if Derozan settled out on producing at a Maggette-type level, but I think Derozan's shown that he has the versatility to be a level better than that.

Last year was Derozan's best season, not his worst lol

It was his worst shooting percentage from midrange. But he has steadily declined from there (as he has taken more and more contested shots from that range).

Maggette is a spot on comparison for dd. Same height, similar statistics, solid work ethic. But the thing with magette is that he missed 66 games the next two years and his fifth year. Most of his teams were terrible teams where he was just tossing up shots after shots. He became a journeyman and was traded a lot. None of his teams really built around him. And feuded with coaches. (Well maybe only once)

He would have been a solid comparison for dd last year but I think dd will pass him and become better than him. Part of the reason is because I personally expect him to stay on the raptors for the next couple years and I expects the raptors to comtinue winning. Winning trumps any personal accolades any day.

Play style wise, yes. But he's no where as strong as maggette.

I feel this is a sharp comparison for DD, but I do feel that he will become better than Maggette.
