Meh, any executive could care less about some fans (most especially me) perception of how mediocre Van Vleet is…in their eyes, he is a fringe All Star/ 2 years removed of a Championship team and 50 plus scorer. Him and whatever top 7 pick the Raptors may have is not bad of a package to give up the no.1 unproven pick.

Why are you running with this Pistons rumour? The entire thing was built on a potential fit, and the proposed trade of Hayes plus filler is probably already more than the Pistons would be willing to give up. Nevermind the #1 pick.

While I can appreciate that some people think Jaden Springer is underrated in the draft - people really need to get over the "need a bucket getter" thing. Just about every player in the draft was a "bucket getter" for their team. Ben McLemore scored 16ppg a game for Kansas and was widely regarded as a walking bucket (and a reliable one!) and look what happened there.

Springer is raw and a project and absolutely not quite ready to run an NBA offense right now, which is why he's outside of the lottery on most draft boards and usually in the twenties at best. If you draft him, you're drafting based on promise and athleticism, rather than his ability to contribute on day one or even day one hundred.

As far as "bucket getter", yeah, that's the type of player the Raptors need right now. Unlike other years we fortunately happen to have a very solid defensive culture with players with pretty high defensive acumen (OG, Siakam, Fred, Lowry), so the team stands to benefit from balancing that with an offence oriented player that can create his own shot. Our offence needs much more help than our defence right now. Need a scorer to help take the pressure off Pascal.

Is it possible we screw up and pick the wrong guy even with all the scouting? Absolutely. Happens every draft. There will be tons of players like McLemore taken before much better ones, and it would suck if it happened to us, but you control what you can control: trust your scouting, go with the information you have, and pick the (theoretical) best player available. If at your pick there are several players available within the same tier of talent/potential, you break the tie based on the type of player your roster needs the most - and this year it's a pure scorer able to create his own shot.

It would be nice if the BPA was also a "bucket getter", but it would take a LOT of luck for it to happen that way. There are normally only few guys in a given draft that turn into good starters much less elite scorers. Fingers crossed.

NOBODY who gets the #1 pick is trading Cade for anything less than an All-Star level player. Think the 2014 trade that sent Andrew Wiggins to Minnesota for Kevin Love. And the Raptors (and Warriors) are the only teams who would consider that trade anyway since they're going to be playoff teams next year.
