My plan for the off season:
- Let Lowry walk. Get about $21M in cap space, assuming Trent's cap hold remains at $2M and not climbs to $5M. Also assumes the 7th pick I believe. I'd prefer this then some bad S&T where we get a crappy contract back.
- Use $12M (3+1 contract) on Holmes. He's got early bird rights with the Kings, so they can only use $8.8M without cap space, otherwise have to create cap space to match that.. easier said then done. Also beats a mid-level contract that other teams can offer.
- Use $9M on a vet wing player to replace Lowry and/or help our bench if Trent starts. Someone like Fournier, Schroder, Lou Williams, Redick. There are options here.
- Bring back Boucher, Bembry, Watson and Harris. Harris had success in the G-league so he's got potential. Bembry and Watson were the two guys that I liked the most off the bench this season (but slim pickings). This means we kick Baynes, McCaw, SJ and Hood out the door.
- Use our room Mid-level (about $5M on a backup center. So someone like Birch, Olynyk (might be too low for him) or Biyombo)
- Bring back Trent for about $15M/year.
Starters: Holmes, Pascal, OG, Redick/Trent, VanVleet
Bench: Boucher, Trent/Redick, FRP, Flynn, Birch, Bembry, Watson, Harris, 2RP via GSW, 2RP via Memphis
That's 15 spots. And should be around $10M below the luxury tax line.
If we can get a stud SG in the draft then can up the offer to Holmes, and get a cheaper depth piece for the bench instead. If we can start that lottery pick even better.
My ultimate goal is to get size in the front court both in the starting unit and on the bench in case of injury. That would avoid derailing a season again. And to use any remaining cap space on a scoring wing player since we're going to have dry spells. We can't got through games where our bench is only putting up 2-4 points a game. That's insanity.
And depending on how we go in the draft we can pivot on what we do with our 2RP's. Generally just want to go BPA.. but, I think we definitely need to get some more size. A guy that can play the PF/SF spot off the bench. Those guys are gold in the new NBA. 6'7 - 6'9 guys that can stretch the floor, dribble the ball, and play defense. Throw them in the G-league and help the 905'ers win another title. Hopefully we get a full G-league season next year. That's how Norm/Fred/Pascal/Boucher earned their stripes.
Looking at tankathon's mock draft.. no idea how good he is but Isaiah Livers is slotted to go below our two 2nd rounders. He's a 6'7 / 230 pound dude. That's the kind of guy that can help you a lot in this new NBA (assuming he can play defense and hit his 3pt shots).
