I did not say Barnes reminds me of Bargnani, I said the pick reminds me of Bargnani. We put tons of hope on it, and then It did not work out. I believe you must draft the best available players. It has proved it right in most of the cases.

The consensus is that Barnes has the highest upside in this class,
no one said that about Bargs.

Barnes was the consensus 5th or 6th pick. Many boards had him in the top 5, some even in the top 3. What is all the reaction about. Since when did "consensus" ever mean anything? The fact that a bunch of people agreed to something that was wrong doesn't give it more legitimacy. Avoid fats, and eat more carbs? Wrong. Ulcers are caused by worry or the food you eat. Wrong. Fats are bad. Wrong. Weight training will make you slow and lumbering. Wrong. The continents don't float around. Wrong. If everybody agrees with something, be on your high alert.

Normally I don’t really criticize picks cause I don’t know any of these players but this has a Marvin Williams over Chris Paul type feel to me. Hope I am wrong.
11.3 pts
6.6 reb
0.7 ast
I was a huge Hawks fan at the time because I lived in Atlanta and Williams was far more raw and a project. He had zero handles, can't pass, can't bring the ball up the court. He had some great dunks and seemed to be a promising shooter. His defense was nothing to write home about.
The thought was Williams would turn into a dominant scorer, but that never happened.
Barnes brings a lot more NBA ready skills to the game than Williams ever did, and he's a much better athlete in my opinion.
When we list what Raptors look for in players Suggs has all those traits as well except freaky wing span.
I still think Suggs will have a better career than Barnes and we should have picked him, but I no longer think Barnes will be a bust like Williams was.
Fingers crossed this feels more like the Hawks taking Trae over Luka where you'd prefer to have Luka now but you're really not upset with having Trae because he's also really freaking good.Last edited by Primer; Sat Jul 31, 2021, 11:46 AM.

I was thinking that for a second then I checked out Marvin Williams college stats. He played the same minutes as Barnes and here are his stats:
11.3 pts
6.6 reb
0.7 ast

It's what most teams are looking for as well, SF's that have length and play both ways.
The reports of Suggs having a bad workout could be more than shooting as well. Bobby and Nurse both raved about Barnes' personality, it's a possibility that the conversations with Suggs didn't impress either. All speculation on my on my part. I don't think one or two bad workouts from a kid would completely sway the pick, but I could see bad interviews and the other psych.evaluations etc. would. Tolzman said the interviews meant more this year because they couldn't see how these kids acted on the bench or in timeouts due to the pandemic.

I do think Suggs will be a good player, but I think Barnes has one of the highest ceilings in the draft, and if the Raptors think he'll be a good fit based on his playstyle, his personality, his attitude towards getting better and how he'll fit in with the other players, I see no issues. Of course front offices can still make the wrong pick, but thats to be determined.

I think Suggs will have a good career but that was never the question. You wanted a star not a guy to be OK for a long time. I wanted Suggs over Barnes but I didn't want Suggs.. if that makes sense. Now thinking about it.. Barnes isn't that raw. He isn't like Kuminga where even on the BBIQ aspect it will take him for ever to just not make simple mistakes. Scottie is a very smart player first and foremost.
I will admit I didn't look too much into Barnes, hearing he didn't have a jump shot. First thing I thought of was Fultz and I wanted nothing to do with that. Now hearing that his later season FT% was over the mid 70's, he is a much more appealing prospect. With his skillset and size, adding a respectable jump shot he does compare to Magic. That's a crazy comparison and if he is even a Magic light we got ourself another pick.
He will be a phenomenal defensive player. The thought of him playing beside OG is a scary notion for opposing teams. We need offence still, but I don't think Suggs was our saviour there (Green would have been, but that wasn't going to happen). If Barnes can hit 30 40 75/80 this year, he's still below average but trending in the right direction. If in 3 years he's 35 50 85, then I totally see where Masai and Bobby were coming from. If he's hitting those percentages with a pull up game, playing the point, crashing the boards, posting a few triple doubles and still being a defensive force, he could be the best complete player in the draft.
