I love the relativism of height and wingspan in the NBA lol This kid has a wingspan longer than my whole body, but it's totally appropriate to say 'only' because of all the freakish genetics running around the court

Watched a bit of USC last night and was paying attention to Mobley. I do wonder how he'd do in the NBA with bigger bodies around him. Like a center like JV/Embiid/Vucevic would just run over him. He really does look a lot like Boucher but has better foot work in the paint. Longer reach of course. I didn't see him take many shots, just rim runs and put backs.
But if he's the #2 pick overall I'm a bit worried about this draft. He *might* be an all-star one day, but he's far from what we saw in a guy like Anthony Davis (unfair comparison, but Davis has a mid-range game and more defensive instincts/IQ). I know we need a C but if we somehow get a top 5 pick, I'm hoping we get a wing/guard instead. Or we'd need some patients as he develops a body. He could be injury prone as well since he looks so frail. Although Boucher has been healthy all year.

I do think Mobley for us would be a better pick UNLESS Cade is available. That said I think Mobley would solve our problems. Mobley would be ALRIGHT in year one. I think the thing to look at is he can definitely pass, has decent instincts. He will fill out though. He runs the floor well too. That said, if we can pick a Cade, our scoring issues may be solved and we can focus on signing a big man. There are competent ones available this year in free agency. Maybe not the best but competent ones.

The Anthony Davis comparisons for Mobley are simple: he knows how to defend about as well as Davis did at this point (and has good BBIQ so he'll get better), and he's got a sweet stroke while also being seven feet tall, which is a large chunk of why Davis is so hard to defend. He's not going to be an all-star in his first year or maybe even his second: he needs time to put on muscle so he can play like a center needs to be able to play.
All of that said: he is absolutely just an upgrade for the Raptors on what Chris Boucher already does for them (he's definitely a better passer and has better interior game), and if the Raptors are looking to jump back into contention next year, which seems to be the case, then he's not the guy we want. He's the absolute best project in this draft, not the immediate splash.

would you be upset if it was kai jones... and also would you rather him or cade...?
If we ended up with a mid-teens pick, I'd rather Usman Karuba than Jones, and I think he's Masai's type of player:
As for Cade - honestly, I think he's a good player with a good NBA career as a baseline, but he's a high-floor sort of player and I worry how elite a scorer he can be in the NBA. If we went for a wing, I actually like Scottie Barnes best: he's going to be an elite defender, and he's an outstanding passer and rebounder. Basically he's Ben Simmons but with slightly better shooting form; if we can develop him into even an average shooter he's going to be franchise-level.Last edited by magoon; Tue Mar 30, 2021, 02:05 AM.

You forgot about OKC, who is going all out to tank and will surpass us. I could also see GSW pulling a weenie move and shutting down Steph for the rest of the year. Then there’s the Bulls and Kings... 2 young teams that don’t know how to win games yet.
But west teams might not even matter. I see us at least qualifying for the play-in and probably winning it, which takes us out of the lottery.
In terms of softness of schedule, since at this point it's fairly obvious we're tanking (Kyle played twenty-three minutes tonight in a blowout against the freaking Pistons, which is the surest sign of it), consider that the Bulls - who are two games ahead of us right now - have seven games against teams trying to tank (us twice, the Wolves, the Cavs twice, Pistons and Magic), which is as many as we do (Thunder, Wiz and Cavs twice, plus the Magic). They'll be trying to win those games. We won't. We also have eight games against top-tier teams versus their six. Unless a weird sort of miracle happens, the Bulls should finish ahead of us, especially since there's two games on the schedule between us and them that they want to win and we want to lose.
As for the Kings, they're four games ahead of us in win-loss, with eight games against tanking teams and only six against top-tier. We shouldn't finish ahead of them either. The Warriors are five games ahead of us and at this point it's just statistically unlikely that we pull ahead of them.
Realistically, our tank goal should be a top-five pick, settling for sixth.

I see a lot of posts about Cunningham and Mobley but is that even realistic? We're sliding down but is it really realistic to expect us to drop down to one of the top 2 spots? Or are we thinking along the lines of another Bargnani Miracle? I think we were 5th highest chance of winning the lottery that year.
your pal,
ebrian
