Dirk is a different type of player. He's a 4 but he really plays like a wing because he can score from everywhere.
The 99 Spurs was unique. Two generational big men on one team? I don't think we'll see that again.
If you look at past NBA champions, with the exception of the 2011 Mavs, 99 Spurs, 04 Pistons and 94 Rockets...what do they all have in common? they all had elite wingers/guards on their team.
80's Celtics - Bird
80's Lakers - Magic
80's Pistons - Isiah
90's Bulls - MJ
Early 2000's Lakers - Kobe
Mid 2000's Spurs - Manu and Parker
06 Heat - Wade
Celtics - Pierce and Allen
09 and 10 Lakers - Kobe
Heat - LeBron and Wade
Spurs - Kawhi
Warriors - Steph, Klay, KD
Raptors - Kawhi
Lakers - LeBron
For the Lakers in the 2000's Shaq and Kobe were insane but again that was Shaq. and guess who D Wade needed? SHAQ... Lebron is a different type of dude so lets ignore that for a second.
Spurs.. Kawhi yes but Kawhi wasn't quite that Kawhi level. He was just emerging then so lets say sure yes but at the same time Kawhi on the raptors was Jordan level. Kawhi on the Spurs benefited playing with Manu/Parker/Tim. Albeit end of their primes but still.. That team likely had one more run left in them too MAYBE if Kawhi stayed. but yeah.
Raptors yeah obviously but raptors were very unique because they were so well balanced at full strength (we realistically didn't even have our full strength since OG was out).
Heat with lebron yes lebron and wade were lebron and wade so ill give you that. Bosh was underrated but yes.
Lakers now... Lebron needed AD.
Warriors are just different they literally played an entirely different way than had ever been done and Steph basically broke things. With KD it was more broken than ever before.
Celtics needed KG. DO NOT DISRESPECT THE BIG TICKET.
Kobe also didn't win without an elite big man (Pau or Shaq). Also with having Pau he needed more balance with Odom and Artest, where as when he had shaq .. shaq literally was a wrecking ball.

Dream, Shaq, Duncan...these are generational big men. They don't make centers like that anymore. I'll take these types of bigs over a great winger or guard for sure but not over generational wingers/guards like Bird, LeBron, Jordan, Magic, Kobe, Curry etc..
As for guys like Embiid, Jokic, AD...these are great bigs but yes I easily would take great wingers like Kawhi, Dame, KD, Tatum, Beal..over any of these guys every time.
I don't think Mobley is in Embiid, Jokic or AD's level.
Who I do not want is Davion.

I partly disagree. Siakam yes is a solid athlete but so is OG. Athleticism is different than agility. OG is STRONG so he has athleticism from a strength and hands perspective.. but in terms of his agility its lacking.

But I was thinking more counters, fakes, pullup midrangers, post-moves, etc. I'm sure he has plenty of those as well.

The Great One wrote: View PostAlso want to add re bigs. The only big man that won anything in the history of basketball without an elite guard or wing was Hakeem Olajuwon. Does Mobley have the potential to be as good as Dream? zero chance. Does he have the potential to be as good as Anthony Davis? is that his ceiling? i'm willing to bet no. Remember - the Pels were a perennial 8th/9th seed with Davis as their best player.

But what happens if you add Davis to a genuinely good team, like the one we'll be fielding next year?
Davis had Jrue Holiday in New Orleans for years. Davis actually had great teammates in New Orleans. One year he had DeMarcus Cousins and Rondo along with Holiday on his team. But nope still a perennial 8th/9th seed team.
Take LeBron out of this Lakers team, do you think they make the playoffs? The Raptors who aren't even trying to win just destroyed them a week ago.Mamba Mentality

There is no Lebron in this draft.
That said, even AD was not that ready. And Mobley less ready again presumably, but hopefully a less injury prone at the same time.
But the team matters. We’ve got a good one where any of these guys don’t have to be “the man†right off the bat. Mobley can slot perfectly into the Ibaka role, probably from day 1.Last edited by SkywalkerAC; Tue May 11, 2021, 03:42 PM.
