Unless we are willing to trade Fred, what is the game plan for another guard if we draft one?
Fred, Trent Jr, Flynn, Harris and maybe Lowry are taking up the 1 or 2 slots. We could move Trent to the 3 in some line ups, but he's really a 2. If we bring in a Jalen Suggs, Jalen Green or a Keon Johnson (or a guy like Bouknight) who would probably all struggle at the 3, do we bypass them and go for the wing or big instead? Like a Cunningham, Kuminga, Mobley, Barnes, Johnson, Moody type of player?
I don't think this organization trades Fred, at least not this summer. Kyle could be back.. sort of a 50/50 and dependent on him more than the team. Not trading him at the deadline might make it more likely he's back but will still go with 50/50. And we'd want to continue to develop Harris and Flynn. And Trent was our big free agent get but at the deadline.
Keon is 6'5 so might be able to play at the 3, but that would be like slotting Norm at the 3 when he was really best as a 2. Positions are blurred in the NBA, but I hate playing with an undersized back court and we'd have one both on and off the bench going forward if we picked him.
If we're picking #2, and Cade is off the board, things will get really interesting.
Someone like Keon would likely first have to earn his role as the primary backup for GTJ. Sub on a good team is a better development situation than a starter on a bottom feeder.

Harris has played quite nicely for a few games, yes. He's also playing games with a vastly diminished roster, and right now there's a bit of somebody-has-to-score-the-points-itis going on here. That he has been able to score this much at an NBA level is promising, but he played 36 minutes last night and Luka Doncic was his primary defender and Luka isn't that good on D. If Masai and Bobby think the BPA whenever we draft is a shooting guard, well guess what: you draft the shooting guard. Jalen Harris doesn't change the equation.
That said: they clearly want bigs and larger wings right now, so I would be surprised if we drafted a guard.

You are overthinking it. Flynn and Harris shouldn’t be factoring into anyone’s thinking and pretty much anyone, outside the top 4 at least, will be coming off the bench.

BTW anyone who thinks we should for sure draft mobley over cade.. I don't know about that.
CADE -> Mobley-> Green -> Kuminga (requires a longer term project but worth it) -> Suggs.
I have come around on green because we need that scoring.

I don't think I'm over thinking things.
If Harris is the real deal.. then we don't really need another guard. At worst Harris has replaced what Terrence Davis gave us last year. That energy spark plug off the bench. He can shoot, and create for himself. His defense is questionable, but so would someone like Jalen Green's. Either way Harris would be Trent's backup off the bench already.
FVV
Flynn
Trent Jr
Harris
Lowry (maybe)
That's 5 guys that are all essentially combo guards on the team. Trent struggles to create for himself or others, but if we add a 6th guard to that mix, how are they getting playing time? Do we put them in the G-league all year.. or really try and find Lowry a new home?
I also took out Bembry who might be on the roster next year (although we have a team option, and he's been pretty inconsistent all season).
We can draft a Green, Suggs, Johnson or Mitchell and just hope one of these guys gets traded (or waived/leave in free agency). Or we draft a big/wing and not have to worry about it.
It's too bad free agency is after the draft. If Lowry jets, I'd love to get a guard in this draft to replace him. But it's not a guarantee that he's leaving. In fact in my opinion, I think there is a likelier chance that he stays simply because he did not get traded at the deadline.

So we traded Norm for just cap ballast? Management won't take that loss. At worst we sign Trent and trade him later. Which is a likely option I guess. But it will be half a year at least with hardly any development for Green unless we get a G-league season.Only one thing matters: We The Champs.

Not the first time management does something for cap
I think Trent is staying. It's pretty much a done deal IMO. Even if they take Green. The bigger question is Lowry's future with the team. If they take Green and Lowry stays.. Green wont' get much playing time on the big club.
I think the Raps hedge on fit over BPA. That's my take for the day. If they pick at #2 and Cade is taken, they'll take Mobley. If Cade and Mobley are off the board and they are picking at #3, I think they take Kuminga. If they are in the 7-10 range.. I think they take someone like Barnes (if he drops), Moody or Sengun.

When team drafts for fit over BPA that's when they fuck up most the time.
They need to draft somebody who can be better than Lowry, better than Siakam and FVV. It'll be a waste to draft a guy to complement incompetent coreOnly one thing matters: We The Champs.

Harris may be better than Green anyway. Green is much younger (19 compared to 22), but just from G-league stats, it's pretty close.
Harris (7 games) - 17.6ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.3apg, 1.1spg, 50% 3pt%, 46.2 fg%, 61.7 TS%, 9.1 Net Rating, 22.5% Usage, 120.4 ORtng
Green (15 games) - 17.9ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.8apg, 1.5spg, 36.5% 3pt%, 46.1 fg%, 61.3% TS%, -7.7 Net Rating, 22.9% Usage, 101.7 ORtng.
I mean Green is younger, and maybe played on a worse team (although Harris had to play with Ellenson lol). Should we take a chance on a top 4 pick on a guy that we already have on the roster, although a bit older? That -7.7 Net Rating is ugly though.
Harris scored 31ppg efficiently against a Dallas team that was trying to win last night. That's not a fluke.

This draft may not be that good though. Most drafts only have like 3 or 4 all-star caliber players that come out of it. And at least one of those guys will be low or outside the lottery typically.
