  • OG is fairly paid for his role. He's a great role player making great role player money. To me it's not his dribble game, it's his health. The dude seems always hurt/injured. The injuries are usually minor (poked in eye) or unpredictable (appendix). But he still can't play all the time which sucks.

But he was our most consistent player in last seasons playoffs. But he's not asked to do to much on offense either. You can't give a guy like that up. Not unless you get a real big difference maker - especially at his age.

    • The Ringer with open minded Bill Simmons and Ryan Rusillo have a bit this morning on the trade deadline.

They talk about Sacto with Buddy and Barnes being good fits for the Chowders (two games over 500) defining them as the eastern power. Try not to throw up in your mouth.

They talk Kyle perhaps going to Philly or Denver. They also drop a segment on that Kyle is telling anyone who will listen he is being traded. Which is not what we are hearing from the local intrepid beat wrtiters Grange/Wolstat/Koreen/Murphy/Lewenberg

Other names on the trade block that get mentions from what sounds like two guys finishing up some good Kush are:
John Collins in Atlanta but no home to go to.
Kevin Love possibilly to San Antonio.
Al Horford . Rajon Rondo. Brandon Ingram and Laurie Markaneen ... could they get moved.

This all starts with 50:35 remaining in the podcast.

Surprised you of all people would listen to a Bill Simmons pod cast

I haven't heard this one, but Ryen likes to shoot the sh!t. He's more about reading tea leaves then actually having any insight with agents or players, but I could be wrong. I doubt Lowry has actually told everyone that he wants out. Otherwise everyone would pick that up.

        Here is what I know:

        - Lowry sold his home in Toronto
        - Lowry wore a hat with dollar bills on it
        - Some Philly beat report insinuated that Lowry would like to come to Philly or Miami.
        - Lowry's agent kyboshed that reporter's views by saying that Kyle did not ask management to move him to Philly and he's concentrating on trying to move the Raptors up in the standings.
        - Lowry's playing as hard as he usually does.
        - Lowry's been a great leader off the court. Like when he showered Fred with love when he scored 54 or gave the game ball to Coach Scariolo for winning his first game as a lead coach.

The team might want to move on from Lowry since he'll be 35 in a few weeks and we're sort of a middling team now. But we also might want to try and keep him so he can retire as a Raptor. He's a slightly diminished player from his peak years, but can still ball and I don't think he'd be a bad value contract at ages 36 or even 37.

We'll find out by the deadline what happens. And if that goes by without a whiff, than in the summer.

        • At this point I think Bill Simmons podcast is the sports news equivalent of middle schoolers passing notes at the back of english class.

Bill got rich and stopped being absolutely obsessed with ball. His knowledge was unparalleled back in the day, and now he's been passed by a few of his contemporaries like Zach Lowe and Kevin O'Connor.

Plus, he got rich and famous for his writing. I'd go as far as to call him my favorite columnist ever, when I found him many years ago I went back and read every thing he'd ever done for ESPN. But I've never been able to get into his podcasting/talk show stuff

            • Agreed, and this has been my take on OG since the day we drafted him. Become the best 3&D you can be before dabbling into other things, if at all. I know i'm in the minority but I don't like when he handles the ball. I feel like any time he does it, even if it doesn't end up on a turnover/offensive foul/bad shot, it's taking away energy/usage from where he can be all-Nba elite: Guarding the best player on the opposing the team while spacing the floor with timely, good legs 3's.

Do that along with the occasional cut and transitional dunks, and we got a heck of a specialist for another 12 years.

Honest question: Why do people think OG has a lot of room for growth? Is that because he is so limited offensively right now, so there’s nowhere to go but up? Or has he flashed some actual potential that makes people think he’s got a lot more upside than just being a 3&D? Or is it because he’s younger than Pascal and Fred?
He has a higher ceiling to be one of the Elite 3 and D player this league has ever produced, taking into consideration his young age at 23, very good fundamentals and high BBIQ.

He can be one of these guys...

OG may not have the greatest handles but so are most of those players on that list. Obviously that is still something he can work and very much improve on.

His specialty as potentially being elite at defending most positions and the threat in shooting the three is a great complementary asset to a franchise.

OG has a high IQ but I wouldn't say that he has very good fundamentals.

His Sports Guy shtick was super refreshing because the industry was full of Doug Smiths, sports blogs practically didn't exist at the time and "the writer is a fan!" was a lot of fun.

The whole landscape has changed, 80% of the Doug Smiths got laid off and the internet is now full of Bill Simmons content creators trying to monitize their material.

Also, Bill Simmons appears to be a complete asshole as a business owner and employer. Hung many good people at Grantland out to dry, per them, and is fighting unionization at The Ringer and staff don't appear to have much good to say about management there.

                      • The Kyle Lowry stuff still sounds completely speculative. I mean it makes sense and you never know when Masai pulls a trigger, but no one appears to be talking about anything concrete.

Sorry, at what value do you not think he'd be a bad value?
                          10M X2?
                          20M X 2?
30M X2 like he's rumoured to be after?

He can definitely be bad value .... at the wrong value and hold this team back from progressing. He's a no-brainer in different directions at either 10 or 30. In between?

Probably missed a couple of defensive rotations in training camp, to which Nurse has no patience for. So even though the guy is your prototypical 6'7" wing that is fast and knows how to put the ball in the dang hoop (basically the most valuable player archetype in the modern nba), we cut him.

                              Our policy seems to be:
---"If you're a natural defender, you are free to be a ghost on offence, shrink the spacing on the court, and force everyone else to play 4 on 5 on offence. Just don't make mistakes and let the 'go-to' guys deal with traps and double teams as the opponents ignore you on offence. We have unlimited time and patience for your offence to develop"
---"If you're a natural scorer, but can't immediately excel on our defence (which is one of the most complex, varied, and physically demanding in the league) we don't care if you're putting 20 per game and hitting clutch shots, you're getting limited minutes, riding the pine or getting cut"
